Variety Review: 2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 96 part 2- 98 part 1 Suncheon Autumn trip

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

***Seonho was on this trip, but was edited down to a minimum after leaving the show due to his personal scandal.***

This Trip’s Theme: When You’re in Suncheon trip

My Entertainment Score: overall 7 out 10 laughs.

Episode 96 pt. 2 was a 4 for me. For the most part, this section was the members discovering who they are partnered with and a short introduction to the area where they are travelling for this trip. The entertainment was in the members being terrified that they may end up playing in the mudflats.

Episode 97 was a 9 for me. Pretty much any show where they play at the mudflats is a hit for me. It looks super hard and unpleasant, but it makes for incredible comedy.

Episode 98 pt 1 was a 7 for me. There wasn’t much of this trip covered here, but it was entertaining.

What Happened:

Opening (1:04:30 of ep 96- end of ep 96)

The staff meets each member at their car and has them pick a card: Mudskipper, Cockles, or Japanese Ghost Crabs. There are only two of each card available and their choice determines their teammate for the day. There is a map on the back that tells them where they can go to meet up with their teammate.

The teams end up being: Jongmin and Junghoon, Seyoon and Seonho (with Seonho edited out as much as possible), and Ravi and Dindin. In effect, they were split up by age which was different.

Lunch Game (start of ep. 97- 44:16)

The members first tour through a reed field before traveling to their first game location: MUDFLATS! YAY!

Mudflat Baseball (15:02- 32:15)

Each team of 2 would get a turn at bat with both other teams in the outfield. They are kicking a ball about the size of a volleyball, rather than hitting it. After their kick, they can run to any base they want, in a straight line and they get a point simply for reaching the base without being touched by someone with the ball. Three outs will get the team out. The team with the most points after one inning will get a full lunch. Second place will get a lesser lunch. The losers will get nothing, but will grill the meat for the first place team.

I enjoyed this THOROUGHLY.

Lunch (and Travel) (32:15- 44:16)

Dinner Game (44:16- 11:16 of ep. 98)

First, the members travel to their base camp location. This week, they are at Nagan Eupseong, a huge Joseon Era fortress. The members are allowed to walk around and introduce the place.

A funny negotiation takes place regarding a coffee truck.

58:34- The game explanation begins. The games are going to be eliminations. The losing team of each round is out and cannot have the best dinner. The loser of the second round will get a modified meal.

The first game is a shoe throwing game. It’s difficult to describe this one without it sounding strange, so forgive me. The teams throw as a partnership. They do a common back stretch in Korea where, standing back to back, they link arms. One person bends at the waist so that the other is resting/bending backward over their back. From that position, the member being held up must throw their shoe over their head and try to hit a large target mat. The innermost ring is worth 10 points. The next is worth 9 and so forth. Each member has two shoes to throw, so each team has 4 tries.

*Side note: Has anyone tried wearing straw shoes like those? I want to know what they’re like.*

The second game is Straw Stack Relay. There are 5 stacks of hay bales. After doing elephant trunk spins, the members have to race and hurdle over each stack. On their way back to touch off with the next person, they must re-stack anything that they knocked over as they raced. The members of the losing team in the first round join the other two teams temporarily as ‘weak links’. The process of picking which team gets which member was a hoot.

Games (1:02:23- end of episode 97)

Dinner (start of episode 98- 11:16)

Sleeping Game (11:16- 22:10)

There are three sleeping spots available: inside, a tent in the yard, in the gazebo on top of the gate. The sleeping game is initial sound telepathy. There are 10 rounds. The PD will give the starting syllables for 2 character words. Everyone needs to write down a word that includes those syllables. If teammates match, they get a point.

Game (13:31- 22:10)

Morning Mission (22:10- 34:45 of episode 98)

The members gather in the gazebo. The PD lets them know that the losing team of the morning mission will have to come for a shoot on another day when the leaves are changing colors.

The game to decide who will have the extra shoot is a random draw. Among 25 choices, there is only one real reed. The teams take turns drawing a stem until one draws the real reed. That team will have the pleasure of coming back another day to see the beautiful colors of leaves changing for the autumn.

26:17-The members that had the second shoot come back. The ride a monorail up to the top of a mountain and then hike down through the fall foliage.
