*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*
This Trip’s Theme: One Year Anniversary Special-Feel the Rhythm of Korea
My Entertainment Score: 5 out 10 laughs, 9 out 10 for satisfaction
2 Days, 1 Night isn’t weighed down by the need to be funny all the time. Their mission is as much to show off the country as it is to make people laugh, so they are prone to having less funny, but meaningful episodes several times a year. Thanks to this show, I’ve learned a ton about the country, it’s history, and it’s culture. This episode is somewhere in between a funny and a meaningful episode. They played, but they were also very serious about making a music video that would show Korea and specifically Incheon off to their best advantage.
What Happened:
**This episode was structured...well, it wasn’t a trip, so it wasn’t anything even remotely resembling a usual episode. I’ll do my best, but I think you’re in for a short article this week.**
Dance Practice (start of episode- 14:44)
**There was absolutely no opening this week.**
The members were split up into two teams to learn the choreography for the video. They switched back and forth between the groups as they learned each 8 count segment.
The beginners were Dindin, Seonho, and Junghoon. I laughed so hard because of their excessively supportive teacher. To his credit, the praise did appear to give them confidence in which they were able to improve and learn quickly.
The advanced class had Ravi, Jongmin, and Seyoon. Seyoon may be a surprise to some of you who haven’t seen his “Dancing Fatty” show (I hate that name so much. It makes me so uncomfortable. You’re a handsome, capable, sweet man in my eyes, Seyoon.) In the show, he goes and learns idol dances, quickly, and performs with the groups on comeback stages. If Jongmin seems a surprise to you, please remember that he was a backup dancer first, and member of Koyote second. His variety career was not actually his main profession. In spite of that, there was one section that even this group acknowledged as a tough bit of choreography. I tried it....sigh...thank goodness no one was filming me!
They showed each other what they had learned and then were released to practice on their own over the next 9 days until the auditions. The members are asked to prepare their own costumes for the auditions
Auditions (14:44- 43:48)
The members chat for a while about the costumes each of them prepared and about the practice that they each put in. Junghoon went to practice with Ravi and Ravi praised him for his dedication and effort.
Each member dances individually before a panel of 4 people that are in charge of the dance team for the Rhythm of Korea dance projects: Ambiguous Dance Company. The panel scores them and decides on the 4 main dancers for the video. I’m going to put the timestamps for the start of each audition here. (Gosh I’m nice! haha)
Dindin 20:00
Seonho 22:20--his explanation of the freestyle was hilarious.
Seyoon 25:42--I got the feeling that he didn’t get to practice as much as he would have liked.
Jongmin 29:00--If you only watch one, this is the one to watch.
Junghoon 34:19
Ravi 36:18--If you want the best danced of the group, this was it.
The scoring discussion followed immediately and results announcements had some of the members extremely nervous.
Dance Team Practice (43:48- 49:11)
The members team up 1 on 1 with members of the Ambiguous Dance Company to learn the choreography and dance style that the group is looking for in the video. There was a lot of humor in this segment, thanks to one of the non-dance team members coming in to watch and comment. That said, they worked hard after that member’s visit.
Non-Dance Team (49:11- 54:27)
The two members that aren’t in the dance team meet with the Creative Director of the Rhythm of Korea project and discuss their roles in the MV. They are playing almost all the parts in the video that are not dancing.
Practice Montage (54:27-55:27)
Jan 5- to Feb 21, the members practiced hard everywhere they went including on break times for other 2 Days, 1 Night episodes. Feb 22 was the day of the MV filming.
MV Shoot (55:27- end of episode)
The members gather before dawn all dressed in their costumes for the first location shooting. The filming proceeds.
1:05:58- 1:12:36 At the last filming location, before the shoot the MV, the members gather to talk about how the process has been for them and to play a little quiz with questions like “Which member is the most different off screen than on screen?” and “If you had a daughter, which member would you want as a son-in-law?”
The last site was Wolmido, which has a famous amusement park at the pier. Members and staff had to ride one of the rides for the MV. That was funny! They had to ride again and again as the dance team made errors.
