Variety Review: 2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 90 pt. 2- 93 pt. 1 UNESCO World Heritage Tour

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

This Trip’s Theme: UNESCO World Heritage Tour

My Entertainment Score: overall 9 out 10 laughs

Episode 90 pt. 2 was an 8 for me. This was an excellent start to what is one of my favorite trips this show has done so far.

Episode 91 was a 9 for me. I loved learning about the different cultural heritages and the members never fail to make things entertaining.

Episode 92 was a 10 for me. GO WATCH THE SSIREUM! I laughed so hard.

Episode 93 pt. 1 was a 6 for me. They were cute doing the morning mission, but it wasn’t anything crazy.

What Happened:

Opening (25:10 of ep. 90- 38:43)

After explaining UNESCO heritage to the members, the PD outlines the concept of the first part of the game. The members will split into two teams of 3. One will go to the northern section while the others go to the southern section. In each section, there are masters recognized by UNESCO. The members will meet the masters and introduce the cultural heritage of Korea then play a game to show their ‘grasp’ of the subject. If they do well, they will gather golden turtles (as points). The team with more golden turtles will get an advantage in the dinner game.

The northern team will have to introduce 3 cultural heritages, while the southern team will have to introduce 2. In exchange for that inequality, there are more golden turtles available to win in the northern section and one heritage spot will include a lunch game with a huge complete meal. The southern section will have lunch, without playing for it.

The northern team is: Jongmin, Dindin, Seyoon

The southern team is: Ravi, Junghoon, Seonho

Heritage Games (38:43 of ep. 90- 39:42 of ep. 92)

**They flipped back and forth between the two teams quite a bit, so I’ll do my best with starting time stamps and ask for some understanding.**

Northern Team

1st Heritage: Korean Tightrope. I would absolutely LOVE to try this. Korean tightrope looks a bit like regular tightrope mixed with trampoline. The rope has some give, so the artist is able to bounce on it. The master they met with was the last person with knowledge of the techniques after his master died. He has taken on 6 apprentices! I’m so glad this art will live on.

(38:43 of ep. 90, start of ep 91-they try the tightrope! hahah-)

The mission for this was to sit on a low tightrope and bounce up enough to see over a barrier where a teammate was acting out a word.

2nd Heritage: Kimjang. Kimjang is the art of making and sharing kimchi. This was their lunch game. They were given several different kimchi and needed to pick out the kimchi that was brought from their homes in order to get their meal. They will get a golden turtle for each correct guess and if all three members are correct, they will get 4 turtles total.

(24:05 of ep. 91)

3rd Heritage: SSIREUM!!!!  Traditional Korean Wrestling which is played using a band that wraps around the waist and one thigh. Athletes grab the thigh band with one hand and the waistband in the back with the other. A win is achieved by forcing the other player out of the ring OR down into the sand first (knee, back, or shoulder). It is 2 out of 3 plays for a win.

(1:04:36 of ep 91)

(4:50 of ep. 92) The missions for this...hahahahaha....oh man. Watch this part! There were two championship winning athletes that the members had to compete against. Between the two men, they have something like 30 championship wins. They’re amazing! I am a fan of one of them and sometimes go look up his matches to watch.

Anywhoooo… the members had to spar against each of the two men. For the first athlete, each member went one vs one against him. He was handicapped by having to hold the band with only one hand while standing on only one foot. Dare you to guess how many of them won. They did have Seyoon on their side...that had to count for something, right?

For the second athlete, they played two vs one. There were still three matches, so each member participated in two. Care to hazard a guess on how many they won this way? Teehee.

Southern Team

1st Heritage: Taekkyeon, a traditional Korean martial art. This was beautiful to watch. It is 2,000 years old! Like capoeira, it feels a bit like a dance martial art with fluid and constant movement in both the upper and lower body. It places more focus on defense and so protective gear is not used.

(50: 38 of ep. 90)

The game attached to this was simple enough. They had to watch a group of 6 people do a routine of kicks and hits. On the bottom of each foot was a ‘letter’. They simply had to see enough letters to make 3 3-letter words. They each get a guess after each routine. They can earn 4 turtles if they are all correct after the first routine, 3 turtles after the next routine and so on.

Lunch: No Game (21:09 of ep 91)

2nd Heritage: Namsadong nori. This is a composite art troupe with six distinct acts that dates back to the Joseon era. The acts are (1) pungmul- traditional music, (2) Beona- plate spinning, (3) salpan- acrobatics, (4) Deotbeogi- masque play, (5) Deolmi- puppet show, and (6) tightrope-but this is no longer part of the act...probably because there was only one Korean tightrope master in the country as we learned earlier. The members first watch a performance of the namsadong nori, so you can get an idea of the show. In some ways, it reminds me of a circus show and I would love to go watch this once.

(43:10 of ep 91)

The members had to play 2 games in this area. The first was ‘catch the sangmo tail’. Sangmo is a hat with a long ribbon hanging from it. The wearer spins the ribbon around as part of a dance. The end of the ribbon is red. Each member had only one attempt to catch that red end, no sliding the ribbon through their hands and no part of their fingers on the white part of the ribbon. Each successful member earns a golden turtle.

(start of ep. 92)The second game was plate spinning. They all had to spin plates, then successfully pass and catch a plate to each member. In theory, the plate would start and end with Seonho. Seonho to Ravi to Junghoon to Seonho. They had three tries.

Wrap Up (29:50 of ep 92- 39:42)

They do a review of the cultural heritages that were covered as well as the masters that they met. Then the golden turtle totals are revealed.

Dinner Game (39:42- 1:08:46)

TUG-OF-WAR! (39:42- 59:51)

This is also a Korean cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. Originally, it was a game played at the harvest. They have an ENORMOUS tug of war to this day in Dangjin where thousands of people participate.

They randomly drew the names of staff members to join their team. They could draw one name for each golden turtle they had collected. Then they played, best two out of three.

Dinner (59:51- 1:08:46)

Morning Mission (1:08:46- 11:46 of ep. 93)

There was no sleeping mission. Everyone was allowed to sleep indoors. Instead, they played a game to decide who would have to go to Andong to do an Employment Agency mission. The game was to say the name of the famous child or parent of someone shown in a picture. The members are shown the pictures one at a time and they get eliminated one by one if they fail to answer in 3 seconds. The team that is completely out first has to do the morning mission. The game is in ep. 92 and the mission is in ep. 93.

The mission team was given rice balls for breakfast, which signalled that they were going to have a labor intensive job. ....But it wasn’t as bad as they expected. They had to act out three scenes for the mask dance that is attempting to get recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage.

Preview: Spring Picnic Trip. I’m confused...It’s autumn now...?
