Variety Review: 2 Days 1 Night Episode 57

*I know this is an odd place to start this, but this show often carries over to the following week, so I’ve decided to just jump in. I’m sorry about that!*

*I’m still deciding how to format this Review, so for now, I’m going to include spoilers about the winners at the very end, so that you can avoid that if you choose. I’ll inform you before I change that if I decide it’s necessary in the future.*

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

This Trip’s Theme: The Taste of Winter

My Entertainment Score: 7 out 10 laughs

This show almost never has slow weeks. It’s hard to go wrong with ridiculous games, slapstick type comedy, and general friendly horseplay. That said, this week wasn’t as riotously funny to me as usual, partly because the sleeping indoor or outdoors game was a quieter, subtler competition than usual.

What Happened

This episode picked up right where the last one ended off with no review of last week’s happenings. I’ll help you out...

Current teams:

Team Variety:Kim Jongmin (Koyote member), Moon Seyoon (comedian), Dindin (rapper). Won lunch last week and three snack tickets.

Team Documentary: Yeon Junghoon (actor/eldest cast), Kim Seonho (actor), Ravi (rapper, former Vixx member, youngest cast). Won 1 snack ticket.

Snack Time (Start of episode-1:46)

Travel to base camp and introduction of the house (1:46-10:30)

Members chopped firewood to heat the house and took a break. Seyoon and Ravi were the best at chopping firewood.

Dinner games (10:30-49:00 ) Three Winter Sports rounds, best 2 out of 3.

  1. Curling (13:49-25:00)

The members pushed a teammate sitting on a gym class scooter down a lane. A half circle target was marked at the very end. Landing in the largest half-ring was one point, the next largest was 2 points, etc. If the push was too hard and the teammate passed the half circle, they would fall into a blow up pool of water and get no points.

There were several funny moments during this game mostly in the falling of various members into the pool of water.

  1. Figure Skating (25:00-37:00)

One team, behind a wall, had to fool the other team about which two members were standing barefooted on a block of ice. The guessing team could ask the acting team to perform tasks, like doing the twist or switching spots, in order to figure it out. The acting team could step off the blocks between requests and onto warming pads, so they were not made too uncomfortable or put in a dangerous situation.

I laughed pretty hard here. Before they began they sent a video message to Kim Yuna, a famous Olympic female figure skater, asking her to come be a guest on the show. The audience isn’t told where the ice blocks are, so we are able to try to guess with the other team and the acting is so over the top, but effective.

Team Variety was the acting team and Team Documentary was the guessing team.

  1. Ice Hockey (37:00-49:00)

Each member had to randomly pick an object to use as their hockey stick from: a hockey stick, a broom, a back scratcher, a large ladle, a small flag, and a …. Then played a game in a small field with a red, soft ball as the puck and teeny tiny goals.

This was hilarious. They got so competitive in this game with the score 1:1 on the dinner games, this was the deciding factor on who got the promised snow crab dinner. The sticks made for a lot of silly moments even among the most athletic members and there were the customary variety level fouls.

Dinner (49:00-58:20) Snow Crab

This is usually an amusing and familial atmosphere with chatting and antics that are quiet. It’s enjoyable to watch in the same way it’s enjoyable to have dinner out with friends.

Relaxation Time/Sleeping Indoors or Outdoors Game (58:20-end of episode)

The Indoor/Outdoor Sleep Game was announced when the first member closed their eyes for 5 seconds or more. This was assumed to be asleep and that member was confirmed to be sleeping outdoors. After the first member, they played peaceful sounds for 7 minutes to encourage another to fall asleep. The third member fell asleep watching a documentary about a scientific expedition to the antarctic. All the other members won and could sleep indoors.

This was funnier than you would think. They had the eldest member ramble about his youth in a soothing voice for a while. After two members were out, those two made a commentary for the remaining members while waiting in the monitoring room with the staff. And the last member out was in a tight race with another...Who knew there could be so much anticipation in watching people fall asleep?

They asked us to come back next week for the end of the Winter Taste trip! I’ll be back for sure.
