Variety Review- 2 Days, 1 Night, Season 4- Episode 72

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

****IMPORTANT NOTE! As summer approaches and I will have my kiddos home all day every day, I’m planning to restructure these reviews. I plan to put out ONLY ONE review per TRIP rather than per episode. This means you’ll get 1 review every 2-4 weeks depending on how the show structures everything. I will break down where each game is found by episode and time stamp. If you hate, hate, hate this idea, please leave a comment for me and I’ll see what I can do to accomodate.****

This Trip’s Theme: Wild Ginseng Expedition, Finished AND This is the Moment

My Entertainment Score: 7 out 10 laughs

I loved this episode. It wasn’t always funny but it was always entertaining and I learned some new things. This show is killing my “I want to go there” list. If you’re short on time and want a fast and simple laugh, I recommend skipping to the Make Rice Cakes Game section (starting around 1:06:51)...that game is not what you think and it is a new favorite for me.

What Happened:

Morning Mission (opening- 30:28)

Explanation/Set up (opening- 17:45)

The members that slept indoors are woken first and set to the monorail to go up the mountain to where the outdoor members slept. Once there, they learn that there are 3 ways to get down the mountain: monorail, walking, and zipline. They will do a quiz to determine which team gets to pick first on how to go down the mountain. The teams will write down 10 things that they think are in the classic 10 Symbols of Longevity. They compare and see who has the most correct to decide the order of choice.

Going Down the Mountain (17:45- 30:28)

Take a guess about which team made it down the mountain first. 1-Monorail team, expected time 30 minutes. 2-Zipline Team: longest zipline in the world (3.2 km) with a max speed of 120 km/h. To make it all the way down, they have to go down two ziplines. 3-Hiking team, expected time 1 hour 30 minutes.

NEW TRIP: This is the Moment (30:28- end of episode)

Opening (30:28- 40:02)

The members arrive and hear about the trip theme. They are spending time in Buan, in the North Jeolla Province this week.It is known for its natural beauty one third of the area has been designated as a national park.

The theme of the trip is “This is the moment”. They will be trying to capture things that are beautiful only at this moment, such as the beauty of spring in bloom or a sunset. They are directed to walk to the next location.

Making Teams (40:02- 51:19)

Explanation (40:02- 43:21)

Singing along with a children’s song, the members have to raise the correct number of hands on each beat. (1,2,3,2,1). So the first person in line will raise their left on the first beat. The first person will raise the other hand and the second person will raise their left on the second beat. On the third beat, the second person raises their other hand and the next person raises both of theirs...that's 1-2-3 done. It continues in that way.

Because this team is adorably bad at understanding spoken rules/instructions, the staff brought out three members to demonstrate the game to the members. Even seeing it, the members were confused.

Splish Splash Raise Your Hand Game (43:21- 48:56)

Wow...I love these guys so much, but I have such a hard time believing this was really that hard. Later in the episode, they have more brain short-circuiting moments….maybe they were tired. Either way, it’s amusing to watch.

Team Formation and Naming (48:56- 51:19)

Team 1: Ravi, Seonho, Seyoon--named themselves “HoRavi Fatty”...this doesn’t translate cutely.

Team 2: Junghoon, Jongmin, Dindin--asked for time to create a team name.

Transportation Game: Capture the Moment! Make Rice Cakes (51:19- end of episode)

Changing Locations (51:19- 58:26)

This was HILARIOUS...Dindin and Jongmin talking about not wanting to turn into each other or others...Dindin called his mom to ask her to set up dates for him because he got so worked up.

Game Explanation/Setup (58:26- 1:06:51)

They play a game in a place where the land is only visible during the low tide. The spend a little time exploring the area.

The winning team will take a car to the next location (5 minutes). The losing team will walk (30-40 minutes). Personally, I would probably have wanted to walk. The scenery looked gorgeous and the weather was overcast but not dark...perfect walking weather.

The members of each team will put on a colored sweatshirt (orange, yellow, and green). There are dolls for each team wearing light blue, red, and purple. The staff will hold up a card, showing each of the colors in the stack. The members have to recreate the stack, lying one on top of another, and putting the dolls where they should be. They call it a modified ‘hamburger game’.

The staff starts calling the Dindin, Junghoon, Jongmin team “That Team” because they chatted too much in the car and forgot to make a team name.

Make Rice Cakes Game (1:06:51- end of episode)

The first round went alright...then the brains started to misfire. I’ve shown this segment to about 9 people now and every single one of them has laughed. It turns into a total mess.

Preview- A photography Competition is in Store. Everything from location to props will be competed over. Who’s art will win?
