Variety Review: Running Man Episode 537

*I know this is an odd place to start this, but all the episodes have carried over to the following week lately, so I’ve decided to just jump in. I’m sorry about that!*

*I’m still deciding how to format this Review, so for now, I’m going to include spoilers about the winners at the very end, so that you can avoid that if you choose. I’ll inform you before I change that if I decide it’s necessary in the future.*

My Entertainment Score: 4 out 10 laughs

I was never invested in the Card Shark Association games, so the first section of the show didn’t amuse me much. On top of that, I’m tired of the general violence in the group and Jaesuk’s consistent ‘joke’ of telling Kwangsoo to be quiet. Those things are obviously going to be more prevalent in games that are mind and power games such as you see with gambling.

The last segment of the show where they are sitting together working out profiles and presenting them was much funnier to me. There was a camaraderie and lightness in the teasing which I much prefer.

What Happened

1st Part of Episode Theme: Card Shark Association, Part 3 (Opening to 57 minutes)

Games Played: Lunch Room Betting and Final Card Game

Lunch Room Betting: (Opening to 8:40-no eating scenes shown)

Members placed a bet (chips are caramel squares) on themselves. They then went one at a time to a location with three doors labelled 1-3 and chose a room where they would eat lunch. The room with the fewest people in it at the end won, doubling their bet.

Final Card Game: (Banter and game rules 8:40 to 18:30, game play 18:30-52:15, punishments 52:15-57)

This was a more complicated version of high card wins. Each player had three rows of cards, one blue and two red rows. Each row had cards numbered 1-10, randomly arranged. The players would choose one card from each row. The blue card would be affixed to their ball cap facing the other players. They would not know their own blue card’s value. They could choose one red card to display and one to remain hidden. They could then bet on if they had the highest total value of all three cards combined.

This game was played with only 5 members at a time, starting with the five the “Association Chairman” chose. A player could be replaced by one of the three remaining if one member at the table went bankrupt. At the end of two rounds of play, the player with the highest number of caramels was a ‘winner’ and allowed to go home. The winner’s seat would be filled by a member that had been sitting out. 5 members could win and a punishment remained for the last 3.

The punishment was either being splashed by a water basin thrown by another member or flogging. The three members were allowed to choose by holding up a sign. If one member chose a punishment alone, that member would be exempt and the other two would complete their chosen punishment.

2nd Part of Episode Theme: Running Man Profile Rewritten (57 minutes to end of the episode)

The profile for the show is grossly outdated, so the team is going to rewrite it for both the show’s description and the members’ individual profiles. The members would each write out the profile, present it, and then games will be played to see whose profiles will go up online.

Reading of the old profiles: (0:57:00-1:05:00)

Composing new profile content (1:05:00-1:13:00)

Presenting SeChan and Haha’s ideas (1:13:00 to end of the show)

Next week’s preview shows that the games will allow the members to get their names on a roulette wheel from which the new profile creator will be chosen.

!!!Spoilers!!!

Results:

Lunch Room Betting: Jongkook used his special power as chairman to determine who was in each room. He was the last to pick. The rooms were split 3-2-2, so he essentially was choosing the winners among the rooms with two people and had no chance of winning himself. Sechan and Jihyo won the game.

The chairman position was challenged and changed (by roulette) to Haha.

Final Card Game: As chairman, Haha picked Haha, Jongkook, Jihyo, Sechan, and Jaesuk to play first. The order to rotate in was Kwangsoo, Somin, and finally Sukjin.

Round 1: Jongkook wins

Round 2: Haha wins. Jaesuk was all in and went bankrupt...he was replaced at the table by Kwangsoo.

1ST WINNER-Jongkook! Replaced at the table by Somin.

Round 3: Sechan wins.

Round 4: Somin wins.

2ND WINNER-Somin! Replaced at the table by Sukjin.

Round 5: Kwangsoo wins. Kwangsoo was all in.

Round 6: Sukjin wins…this round was actually funny. Haha and Sukjin were both all in and Haha used his chairman power to switch cards, but he still lost.

3RD WINNER-Sechan! Everyone left is at the table. Everyone uses the option to pawn clothes, accessories, etc.

Round 7: Sukjin wins (a very small pot).

Round 8: Kwangsoo wins (another very small pot).

4TH WINNER- Jihyo!

Round 9: Jaesuk wins. Jaesuk and Sukjin are both all in, so Sukjin is confirmed for the bottom 3 and punishment.

Round 10: Haha wins. Haha and Kwangsoo are both all in, so Kwangsoo is confirmed for the bottom 3 and punishment.

LAST WINNER- Haha!

Punishment Determination:

Kwangsoo and Jaesuk both chose splashing from a water basin while Sukjin escaped alone by choosing flogging.
