Variety Review: 2 Days 1 Night- Episode 59

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

This Trip’s Theme: Tour of Granting Wishes, Continued/Finished.

My Entertainment Score: 6 out 10 laughs, 10 out of 10 in satisfaction

The episode definitely had humor aplenty. The members always entertain when quizzes are involved and a roulette with almost no winning slots is always full of potential. But they also gave us a full guerrilla concert with a simultaneous behind the scenes....granted it was in their variety style, but it was still fantastic! This show is good to their fans! Thank you 2 Days, 1 Night! Great week!

What Happened

As a reminder, Seyoon is absent for this trip after his doctor advised him to rest after receiving a diagnosis of overwork and stress. This trip is in response to the new year. The PD is trying to start the new year on a good note, so she collected responses from the members about what they would like to do. Last week, Seyoon, Seonho, and Junghoon’s wishes were addressed, though not exactly in the ways they had intended.

Fourth Wish: Ravi’s Wish with Dinner on the line! (Opening- 39:00)

Ravi’s Wish was taken from a summer post that he made on social media. He was lamenting that, thanks to what I’ll affectionately call the plague, the water bomb concerts were all cancelled. For those not on the concert scene, a water bomb concert is a concert where audience members have water guns and everyone gets soaked. Ravi has repeatedly mentioned that he misses performing, so no one was surprised about that, but a water bomb concert in the middle of winter was a shock.

Announcement/Rules (Opening- 6:00)

The members learn that they have only 2 hours to plan and rehearse the full 30 minutes live broadcast concert. To incentivize the group, dinner is on the line. They would love to have a beef bomb hot pot dinner, but they have to accumulate 50,000 viewers throughout the broadcast. They are not confident!

Planning Time (6:00- 11:20)

This was funnier than you would expect. They had setbacks, but they overcame them. The rehearsal was briefly covered. This was the show’s equivalent of a teaser.

Concert (11:20- 30:05)

Junghoon sings his one song, Seonho fulfills his promise to learn a girl group dance (Ddu-du-ddu-du), Dindin performs one of his songs, Jongmin performs a ballad cover! The four members (with piggy stand-in Seyoon) perform a summer vibes bop. Lastly Ravi performs three songs. The last song is where he gets soaked by the other members.

Results (30:05- 34:05)

Dinner (34:05- 39:00)

As always they ate happily. There was some speculation on the upcoming wishes. Jongmin took over Seyoon’s usual place of making the leftover into a fried rice type second course. He bumbled here and there, but the result was good.

Fifth & Sixth Wishes: Dindin and Jongmin’s Wishes with sleeping indoors or outdoors on the line! (39:00- )

Dindin and Jongmin wanted to study! No, I’m not kidding. Dindin claimed to have not appreciated how fun studying could be when he was still in school. Jongmin, sweet man, wanted to study English to avoid embarrassing himself on the show again. “Gib me luvbu!”

Announcement and Rules (39:00 - 43:45)

The members will choose a study group, either Dindin’s common knowledge group or Jongmin’s English group. They are given time to study a book on that topic and a room for the group to work together without disturbing the other team. At the end of the study time, everyone in the group will be tested on the material and the group’s average score will determine who sleeps indoors and outdoors.

Junghoon chose first-English team. Ravi and Seonho chose the common knowledge team, much to Dindin’s chagrin

Study Time (43:45 - 52:16)

I want to study with these guys...one group for when I need to learn and one for when I want to enjoy myself. The members have trouble understanding the games that they play for the show, so you can only guess how problematic this was at times.

Quiz Time (52:16- 56:39)

Some running jokes made their way into this part of the episode. They have a habit of acting out the part of a student taking the national exam to be a civil servant for the sixth or seventh year straight whenever another member is being disruptive. They make taking tests pleasant to watch.

Results/Answer Review (56:39- 59:48)

Jongmin reviewed his answers after the results. He is genuinely trying to learn more English. I’m so proud of him!

Sleeping Time (59:48- 1:01:06)

This was one of the coldest days in Korea this year, so the outdoor team was concerned, but they were able to settle in.

Morning Mission (1:01:06- )

Announcement and Roulette (1:01:06- 1:09:56)

The staff gathered some of the worst wishes from the group and put them on a roulette. The members had to open the wishes and hear how each would be fulfilled. There were almost no good options.

Mission (1:09:56- end)

I’ll leave a note in the spoilers about this. I don’t want to say too much for people who want the surprise, but this was a nice time: sweet rather than hilarious.

Preview- Seyoon is back and the members are all dressed up. “The Whole Team Maketh Fun”. I’m excited! And also scared...what use do these members have for suits? There must be a twist.

!!!Spoilers!!!

Ravi’s Wish:

The digital guerilla concert did so much better than expected to the point that there were buffering issues and viewers were kicked out or locked out of the system. The production team did not plan for the volume of web traffic and gave the whole team a full dinner both as an acknowledgment of the probable win if the system had been able to handle the volume and as an apology for their mistake.

Highest View Count: Ravi’s Water Bomb Song-- 42,000 viewers

Estimated Total Number of Viewers-- over 100,000 visitors

Jongmin/Dindin’s Wish:

Test Results:

Ravi- 44

Dindin- 36

Seonho- 32

**Average Score- 37**

Jongmin- 60

Junghoon- 92

**Average Score- 77**

Jongmin Team wins! Ravi, Dindin, Seonho sleep outside.

Morning Mission:

Ravi’s wish to have a drink and chat with the members was chosen. Because of the hour and the show rating, the members were given a small yogurt to drink and told that they couldn’t leave for an hour. There were some really nice moments in their conversation along with some funny moments where they hoped more time had passed than actually had.
