2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 157 pt 2- 159 pt 1 HOON-MIN WAR trip Review
*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 5 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip is designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game, a morning mission, and a getting off work game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent, etc. Trips often cover several episodes.*
This Trip’s Theme: HOON-MIN WAR trip
My Entertainment Score: overall 9 out 10 laughs
Rather than breaking down my scores on the particular episodes, I think it would be better to stick to my overall impression of this race because it was consistently fun to watch. The places that it introduced were mostly new to me and I want to see all of them, so the show served its purpose. But I was also pleased with all the games.
What Happened:
Opening (46:19 of ep 157- 58:18)
The members gather and then pay their respective donations from the train game last trip.
Trip Explanation/Team Formation - 53:10
After a comment of “Okay, this is war” in the previous episode, the staff set up a race that pits the two eldest against each other. The teams are Junghoon, Seyoon, and Seonho vs Jongmin, Dindin, and Inwoo.
The members will be racing to find the final location first. Each game will give them a clue to the final location. They are told there is a great benefit to arriving first. “The winning team will see the moon. The losing team will see the stars.” Care to guess what that means?
Race Games (58:18 of episode 157 - 55:10 of episode 158)
I will put the timestamp that a new leg of the race is shown. The teams did not have to wait for each other, so there may (or may not) be some overlap if a team falls behind.
Yeongwol Bridge Relay- 58:18.
They must speed walk this stunning bridge to a small hut. Any time they are caught running, they must pause for 10 seconds. In the hut, each member will have a breakfast of sweet potatoes and iced Americano. The fastest team wins and gets to leave for the next location 10 minutes earlier.
Simple enough, except this is 2 Days 1 Night where no meal is simple. The sweet potatoes are straight out of the fire and the iced American is frozen completely through, like a coffee popsicle.
***Note: the bridge is so beautiful. Even more so when you realize it is washed away each summer and rebuilt using traditional techniques each fall. That’s definitely on my bucket list now. Check it out***
Ticket Race - 1:15:25
The members arrive at a super cool modern art museum and have to follow clues to find the 3 entrance tickets that they will need for the next part of the race. For one of the tickets, they have to climb up into one of the exhibits and keep two balloons afloat for 30 seconds. Imagine being able to play in your art. So cool!
***Note: this place is going on my bucket list too. It’s called “Yeongwol Y Park”. If you search for it, you’ll see headlines like “Epic art museum in the middle of nowhere”. ***
Seondol Romeo and Juliet Speed Quiz- 12:06
The team has 3 minutes to guess 10 words. The catch is that each time they guess a word they have to switch the guesser…which involves a small hike and a stair climb.
***Note: I want to go here too. Yeongwol is apparently exactly my style. Seondol is a unique rock formation that looks like it was sliced by a giant sword. It was gorgeous when covered in snow. I want to know what it looks like when the mountain is all green in the summer!***
Find the Final Location- Coffee Game - 34:00
The members must choose a cup of coffee (as opposed to a cup of salty coffee). There are 6 cups to choose from. If all 3 in the team are right, then they win. If not, they have to wait 5 minutes to try again.
We finally learn what seeing the moon and seeing the stars means! Seeing the moon is getting a special drink with an egg in it…so it looks like the moon. It’s called ssanghwa tea. Seeing the stars means…seeing the stars. The losing team will have to travel 1 hour from base camp in the middle of the night to go stargazing.
Basecamp - 47:05 Travel to basecamp and some relaxation time for the members. They do some arm wrestling to figure out how Seonho fits into the group’s strength rankings.
Dinner Game (55:10 of episode 158- 7:32 of episode 159)
The members are taken to a large snowy field where they have 10 minutes to find the buried ingredients that their teams can use to make dinner.
Chicken Twist - 1:02:48. No one found the main ingredient, chicken. That was no shock to the staff who had put it somewhere else. Because the ingredient was chicken, the teams do a one-legged fight for the opportunity to get the main ingredient. *Note: the Korean name of the one-legged fight is a chicken fight, so that connection makes better sense in Korean. The winner gets to fish the chicken container out of an almost completely frozen stream.
Cooking - 1:07:30
Dinner - start of episode 159
Sleeping Game (7:32 of episode 159- 39:44)
Because the weather was unsafely cold, all the members would sleep inside. Instead, they are playing for the option of sleeping on a heated floor. They will play “Snow Water Triathlon”. For this, they will try over the course of three rounds to collect 6 liters of water or snow in order to succeed.
Round 1 - 11:05. Each member is given a tube (cut in half) which they must put end to end to make a ramp connecting the starting point to the collection bucket. The first members will have to run to the back of the row in order to make it. They have 90 seconds to collect as much as possible.
Round 2 - 15:44. The members sit in a line wearing blindfolds. Each member has a bucket. Starting at the front of the row, they simply have to dump their bucket of snow over their head for the next person to catch. The last person passes the snow into the collection bucket. They have 100 seconds.
Round 3 - 21:10. All the members lay down, shoulder to shoulder and lift their feet. A bucket of snow is placed on the feet of the first member in line. Then they have to pass the bucket along and dump it into the collection bucket. They have 100 seconds.
Bonus - 26:24. **Spoiler-ish** The director was moved by the member’s passionate playing, so if more than half of the members are able to shed a tear within 30 seconds, they can have the heated floor.
There was a bonus on the bonus mission. I’ll put it in the spoilers section.
Sleeping or star-gazing - 30:53. If it weren’t for the temperature, I think star-gazing would have been a prize instead of a punishment.
Morning Mission (39:44- 57:15)
The members go through a short race course, picking up an item along the way to help the melt ice. Inside the ice, there are ‘going home’ tickets that allow them to leave immediately. The first 5 members to find a ticket can go home. The first leg of the race is to call their manager to ride a sled which the members pull uphill to the item table. They they have to melt the block of ice.
In a horrible twist, the going home tickets already have a member’s name on it, so opening a ticket might send someone else home. I dare you to guess who has the worst time with this. I’ll give a hint: this is getting to be a pattern for him.
Final Member Mission - 54:50. The final member has to split 40kg of firewood (with an ax, in case that wasn’t clear) before he can go home.
Preview: New Year Special. As we roll into the year of the Rabbit, the team set up a very special race. All the members are starting life over! They all get reverted to age 0 (which means no one has to use formal speech) and can only age by eating rice cake soup, a traditional birthday dish in Korea. But what if Seonho wins a soup before Junghoon? Can the youngest overturn the natural order and usurp authority? Would he be a merciful elder?
