2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 159 pt 2 - 162 pt 1 New Year’s Time Travel trip Review
*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 5 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip is designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game, a morning mission, and a getting off work game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent, etc. Trips often cover several episodes.*
This Trip’s Theme: New Year’s Time Travel trip
My Entertainment Score: overall 10 out 10 laughs
This trip was good from start to finish. In some cases, I think the games probably turned out better than the writers had expected. There is a reason that this trip spanned 4 episodes…I wouldn’t have been able to edit out anything either. Bravo!
What Happened:
Opening (57:15 of ep 159- 1:09:15)
Game Explanation - 1:03:51. They are in Gochang which has many historical sites, therefore, they are having a race that will send them all back in time…to age 0. In order to “age”, they have to win games and eat a bowl of rice cake soup. The three “oldest” members get to sleep indoors.
Aging Missions (1:09:15 of episode 159- 1:17:40 of episode 160)
Mission 1 - 1:09:15 of ep 159. Protect My Alter Ego
Each member has a life sized cardboard cutout. The member whose “alter ego” remains standing the longest wins. There are hacky sacks provided, but the members can abandon their cutout to manually knock things over if they choose.
As a hilarious consequence to one of the members gaining seniority, the other members must carry their “elder” from place to place. They also have to sit in the back of the fan with the windows down (remember, it’s winter).
**Note: Episode 160 begins with travel to the next location.**
Mission 2 - 5:40 of episode 160. Dalgona for 2.
The members had to cut out a shape from dalgona (a sweet treat). The trick was that one member had a much more complicated shape…and they had to sharpen their own knife on a whetstone.
When they finished cutting out a shape successfully, they could run to a hut. Three cloche were waiting…only two had a bowl of soup hidden underneath.
Mission 3 - 16:30. Farm Missions.
Three bowls of soup could be earned here through 3 missions. There was also a bonus mission.
The first mission was to take a selfie with at least seven sheep (showing all their faces).
The second mission was a math problem. (The number of kinds of animals in the barn) + (the number of toes on a guinea pig) x (the number of black rabbits in the barn). The counting was a problem, but so was order of operations. Stay in school, my friends. Stay in school!
The third mission was a guerilla concert for a pair of dogs. After finishing a song, the dogs needed to be in a specified area that showed they had stayed for the entire performance.
The bonus mission could change the fates of the members. The member that went there could write the name of any member and force him to revert to age 0 again.
Mission 4 - 53:56. Book Prison Escape.
The members are locked up in a small 1-room library. The first 2 who made a 4-letter idiom using the first letters of the titles of 4 books (and could explain the meaning of the idiom) would be able to have soup. …But all of them had to make a 4-letter idiom to escape. If they failed to escape, they would lose 1 year of age every 5 minutes.
Dinner Game (8:12 of episode 161- 42:50)
The members are going to play several games against the staff to decide if the members or the staff get an eel meal that both love. All the games are played as a king game, meaning there is one member on each team that is “king”. As long as that member is safe, the team wins and as soon as that member is out, the entire team is out. The winner of 3 out of 5 games will get the eel dinner.
One-Legged Fight - 8:50. (4v4)
Pig Ssireum - 14:25. (3v3) To play this everyone sits and holds their knees to their chest. They scoot around and try to knock other people over.
Arm Wrestling - 19:17. (1v1)
Dodgeball - 26:14. (6v6)
Dinner - 34:40
Morning Work Crew Game (1:17:40 of episode 160- 8:12 of episode 161) and (42:50- 1:14:05)
The first portion of this is this: One by one, the members are called (based on the order that they laughed upon seeing a sign in the lounge room that said blessings would come to those who laugh) out to hide a marker with their name on it. They have all the rooms, not including the bathrooms, on the second floor. Later members obviously can use their minute to look for other markers while they’re there.
In the second portion, they reveal why they hid name markers. Three members are going to be chosen to do grueling and freezing work in the morning…gathering 30,000 sheets of laver. To determine who will have to endure a job that has been called the harshest job, they play a game. They have 30 minutes to find markers and hang them on a special stand in the auditorium. If a member discovers his own marker hanging, he can replace it with the marker of a different member as long as it is done within the 30 minute time limit.
This was amazing…it went in so many unexpected directions.
Morning Mission (1:14:05 of episode 161- 8:55 of episode 162)
The laver collecting team sets off while it's still dark outside.
1:20:39 - The other 3 members wake and gather by 8am as instructed, which saves the laver team from 5,000 sheets. The new total goal for the laver team is 25,000 sheets.
They then have to do a mission to decide if the laver members will need to collect more or less. Group ball bounce. The members each hold a rope with a round platform hung in the middle. They must bounce a ball off the platform. If they fail to bounce 3 times, the laver team will have to collect 5,000 more sheets. For each bounce over 3, the laver team’s total will be reduced by 1,000 sheets.
At the start of episode 162, they play ‘keep the stick standing’ to help the laver team. For this, each member has a stick. On the count of 3, they must release their stick and grab the next before it falls. Once again, if they fail in the first 3 moves, the laver team will have to harvest another 5,000 sheets and each catch after 3 will reduce the amount to harvest by 1,000 sheets.
Breakfast - 4:34 of episode 162
Preview: Protect Our Heritage Race! The members are staying in Seoul for the next trip. They will be touring one of the great palaces and working to get puzzle pieces to complete the picture of the 2 Days 1 Night poster image. Variety history reconstructed in a historical place…what could go wrong?
