2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode - 164 pt 2 - 166 pt 1 Minimalism trip Review
*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 5 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip is designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game, a morning mission, and a getting off work game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent, etc. Trips often cover several episodes.*
This Trip’s Theme: Minimalism trip
My Entertainment Score: overall 8 out 10 laughs
I loved the concept of this trip, even if the members managed to completely derail the staff’s plans. It was nice seeing the members ‘win’ so to speak for a change.
What Happened:
Opening (8:00 of ep 164- 1:21:55 of episode 164)
The members gather up and discuss what they packed for this trip. They’re told that the staff, including stylists, will not get involved with this trip. That was why the staff told them before the trip that they should pack everything they need. However, knowing that the members wouldn’t have packed everything necessary, they prepared a game using the prop truck to help the members get what they will need. In one minute, the members work in a relay to take things off the prop truck and bring them beyond the start line. Anything over the line at the end of one minute is theirs for the trip.
Relay - 15:48.
After the relay, they learn that they can only bring what they are able to fit in the van…that they with their suitcases are all also riding in. They proceed to do a MASTERFUL job of packing a lot of incredibly unnecessary things along with the things that matter. There is some travel to the first location at the end of this time.
Race Explanation - 35:18. MINIMALISM trip. The members are, as of now, failing miserably at this concept. To help them learn to live happily with less, they will be playing games with some amount of the things they have packed on the line. Each time they play a game, they will first roll a die numbered 5-10. If they win the game, the roll will not matter. If they lose, on the other hand, they will have to give up things equivalent to the number rolled, in kilograms, which means they may only have to give up 1 thing if it’s heavy and they roll well. NOTE: I will reveal how much weight is at stake for each game here, rather than in the spoilers, as it doesn’t change the results in any way.
First Game: Ssireum (37:38- 37:34)
6 kg (13+lbs) is at stake. The majority of the members must win 1 v 1 matches against (some rather buff looking) staff in order to keep all their stuff. This means 4 or more must win.
Games start at 44:55.
The Idea - 1:03:36. The members realize that the staff is determined to take their stuff, so they make a plan to stop along the way to the next location and eat all the yummy foods that they brought before it gets taken.
Snack Zombie Survival Game (1:21:55 of episode 164- 12:29 of episode 165)
8 kg (a little more than 17 ½ lbs) is at stake. The members think they are playing a water gun game 3 v 3 until 3 men in zombie make- up emerge from the woods. They must avoid being tagged by the zombies for 5 minutes. If even 1 member survives, they will win the game and a very special snack. If not, they must give up some of their stuff.
Note: The zombies are from a dance crew in Korea that does bone breaking (probably my least favorite type of dance to watch because I can only see dislocations and over stretching…shudders…it makes for some super creepy zombie movement though). The dance crew is called Centipedz and they are responsible for a lot of zombie movie choreography in Korea. If you like that or breaking, I do recommend them. They are very talented in their field.
Zombie Maze Game (12:29 of episode 165- 36:14)
The members must collect 5 flags in a hedge maze and only 1 of them must make it out of the maze with those flags in 30 minutes in order to succeed. (So, flags can be passed between hedges if necessary, etc.) When they enter….ZOMBIES! Haha. It turns into…freeze tag, where the zombies are ‘it’. Members can unfreeze other members by tagging them, but if all 6 members are frozen, they automatically lose. The win conditions are the same even with the zombies…5 flags and 1 member exits in 30 minutes.
This was…everything good about variety shows. This might be my favorite game in the last year.
Tree Stump Bridge Quiz (36:14- 44:52)
The members all lined up on a ‘bridge’ of tree stumps that leads straight out into the ocean. They are given questions such as “Name of the 10 symbols of longevity” and each member must give a correct answer. If all six answer correctly, they can take 1 step away from the ocean. If any of them gives an incorrect answer, they will have to move 1 step toward the ocean. If they all cross the finish, they are safe. If they end up getting wet, they will have to roll the dice to give up some of their stuff.
Sunset Photo Mission (44:52- 1:02:30)
The members split up into pairs and head to 3 different locations to try to capture photos that match photos provided by the staff. At one location, the members encounter a hilarious problem: low tide. If they fail to capture pictures from an identical point of view as the examples, they will have to roll the dice to give up more of their stuff.
Break Time - 59:30
Dinner (1:02:30- 1:22:05)
The members are given a special chance to earn a dinner dish as well as the opportunity to sleep indoors if they win 1 out of 2 tries at a game. If they lose, they have to roll the dice again. The game is relatively simple. A large grid is laid out. Each team has 5 pieces and must place them in relay race style, aka one at a time, while trying to make a bingo. After the 5 pieces are originally placed, the next runner can move any piece (from their team only) that they wish to either block or create a bingo.
Dinner - 1:14:44
Sleeping (1:22:05 of episode 165- 20:24 of episode 166)
The members can set up basecamp using the items from the car, which includes a tent.
However….
There are individual games to allow 3 members to sleep indoors.
Fold it, Inflate it - 1:24:30. Members wear stretchy pants and put a HUGE (not yet inflated) balloon in them. Then they take turns giving prompts such as “Married men, inflate”. Air will be put into the balloons of whomever qualifies for the prompt. Honestly, this looked so scary and was so funny! The first two members whose balloon burst will have to sleep outside.
One Thing I Know - 6:10. This game was played as a 2 v 2 team game. Teams took turns giving questions that they believed only they would know. If the other team failed to answer the question, a huge water balloon over their head would be lowered…oh, and they were wearing pin headbands. The member that gave the question needed to provide a correct answer too. The members who burst the balloons will have to sleep outside.
This game was a bit of a punishment to the members that lost the last game…as a benefit to the show, I guess. They had to hold the ropes for the huge water balloons and lower them at the appropriate time.
Morning Mission (20:24 of episode 166- 45:45)
The morning mission is a team mission. The team that finds and all arrives at the tortoise and the hare statue will get a benefit. *This part of the mission was given out before bed.* One team needs to collect gray mullets (fish) and the other needs to collect spoon worms. The team to collect the required amount first will get breakfast. The benefit for the earlier team is to choose which thing they want to harvest.
Preview: Young Boy v Old Boy Trip. A special Youth vs Experience Trip.
*****SPOILERS*****
Breakfast Game - Ssireum
Dindin - strategically chooses the largest opponent and obviously loses.
Seonho - strategically chooses the next most threatening opponent and obviously loses.
Junghoon - WINS!
Inwoo - WINS!
Seyoon - WINS!
Jongmin - WINS! —They get to keep all their stuff.
Zombie Survival Snack Game
They are all caught and have to give up 8kg of the stuff they packed. …Thanks to the useless things they impulsively packed and the trash they created from their impromptu stop, they are able to do this easily without giving up anything that they actually want or need…or even the things they just kinda like.
Zombie Maze Game
The members succeed…but it's a close call. They get to keep all their stuff again.
Stump Bridge Game
The members succeed and play bonus rounds to win meat and ramyeon for dinner.
Sunset Photo Mission
The members fail. They roll 6 and give up 6kg (13.2 pounds)….most of which is the ice out of the cooler, which is fine because they’re about to make dinner.
Dinner Game
The members win round 1 easily. They are offered side dishes if they are willing to play a redemption round for the PD team. They lose the second round, so the PD team gets to eat the dishes from round 2 and the members roll the dice. They have to give up 7kg (15.4 pounds) of stuff….mostly they give up the cooler itself this time.
Sleeping Games
Fold it, Inflate it - Dindin and Seyoon will sleep outdoors.
One Thing I Know - Hilariously, the balloon absolutely refused to pop on Jongmin‘s head…even after repeated drops, so he was saved. Inwoo has to sleep outside.
Morning Mission
Seyoon, Dindin, and Inwoo arrive earlier and choose the spoon worm mission.
Junghoon, Jongmin, and Seonho win the breakfast mission!
Seyoon and Inwoo persist in finding spoon worms and get to eat as well. Poor Dindin.
