2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 166 pt 2 - 168 pt 1 Passion of Youth Trip Review

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 5 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip is designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game, a morning mission, and a getting off work game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent, etc. Trips often cover several episodes.*

Note from the Steven: I’m looking for a new image to reflect the line-up change, but so far I’m not seeing any good new posters from the broadcaster, so it may have to just wait for Season 5.

This Trip’s Theme: Passion of Youth trip

My Entertainment Score: overall 9 out 10 laughs

The final parts of episode 166 wasn’t my absolute favorite, but the rest of the trip was hilarious.

What Happened:

Opening (45:45 of ep 166- 54:38)

The members are gathered in Namhae Island and after some chat, they are told the theme of the day. The teams are split into “Team Youth” and “Team Wannabe Youth”...haha, oh dear. In case the names don’t make it clear, Junghoon, Jongmin, and Seyoon are one team. Dindin, Inwoo and Seonho make the other team.

Darangyi Village Bingo (54:38- 3:30 of episode 167)

This is technically the start of the dinner race, but it felt like a pre-race game to me, soooo…

In a scenic village, the staff have hidden 25 boxes with numbers in them. There are also 7 mission locations where a team can earn a star sticker to put wherever they want on their bingo board. The bingo boards are simply numbered 1-25 in a 5 x 5 grid. The teams are given maps that indicate the location of boxes and missions. The first team to make a bingo gets to start moving to the next mission location 10 minutes before the losing team.

Dinner Game: Race to Base Camp (3:30 of episode 167- 1:26:00)

**From this point on, the two teams are moving at different times, so the time stamps are difficult to get. I’ll at the very least post the time stamp from when each stage’s game is introduced.

Game of Loyalty on the Skywalk - 8:20. Namhae Treasure Observatory is a beautiful location. It is round with glass walls to give a tremendous view of the ocean around it. There is a skywalk over the cliffs outside the window. The members of a team have to complete a loyalty mission here. They have 10 minutes to complete 3 poses that require them to hang on the safety equipment on the catwalk. The first is for all 3 members. Two will face up toward the sky leaning back with their feet on the catwalk and their hands outstretched. The final member will lean forward, facing the ground, touching hands with the upward facing members. They then do repelling hops to the next station. This one has only 2 members who have to swing back and forth with arms and legs outstretched. The final mission is for only one member. He will swing face first while making a superman pose. When the mission is completed, the members can have coffee and a local citron bread snack.

Honestly, this looked like a great time to me. I would love to try it and I would love to sit in the observatory for some inspiration while writing. Bucket list, you have been updated.

Heat Up in Passion - 36:45. The members arrive at the colorful Bori Temple on Mount Geum. One member wears a brainwave detector (which is funny looking all on its own) on his head. Within 30 seconds, his teammates must help him get the indicator up to the maximum level in order to pass and go to the next location. If more than one member passes, the team can earn lotus bread.

Treasure Hunt - 50:20. The members must kayak from Seolri Beach to Sa Island! Once there, they must search for the treasure to win the Namhae Island Full Course Dinner.

Twist! The treasure is in a safe and the password is on flags that can’t be read unless the kayak is once again used.

Break - 1:09:25. While the staff prepares dinner, the members are able to rest. Base camp is Namhae German Village. The buildings are mostly in the German style as they were built by Koreans who worked as nurses in Germany but returned home.

Dinner - 1:15:35.

Sleeping Game (1:26:00 of episode 167- 32:00 of episode168)

The game to choose those to sleep indoors and outdoors was named “A triathlon of youth brings pain”. The first three members to finish got to sleep inside. Simple enough.

The first stage was to squat over a bucket of ice water…for 2 minutes! Stage two was to complete 10 situps…without letting a bottle of water swinging overhead hit you. The final stage was to run in acupressure sandals, complete 10 jump rope jumps in a row and bang a druml.

However…they did not all start at the same time. The members would begin the race in 5 second intervals. To determine the order to begin the race, there was a mini-game: Thigh Smashing. Yes, you read that right. And no, it’s not something unexpected. Everyone sat in a circle and took turns smacking the thigh of the member to the left. The member getting hit held a harmonica in his mouth. If no sound came out, he passed and could continue the game. If not, he was out. Last man standing started first and the first man out started last.

Thigh Smashing - 3:00 of episode 168. This was actually much funnier than I expected from the explanation.

Triathlon of Pain - 11:10.

Morning Mission (32:00 of episode 168 - 1:08:30)

The breakfast mission was to do a job representative of youth: a part time delivery job. The members all began in the same place. There were 3 orders to be filled, so it was essentially a 1v1 battle with the 3 members to complete a delivery receiving breakfast. The items to deliver were…unwieldy: two full-to-the-brim beer glasses, a platter piled mountain high with tangerines, or a giant teddy bear. A VERY simple map was provided to each member (not that it seemed to help much).

Beer - Junghoon v Dindin

Tangerines - Jongmin v Inwoo

Teddy Bears - Seyoon v Seonho

**Note: The members that completed deliveries were so sweet with the citizens!**

Breakfast - 1:01:45.

Getting Off Work Mission (1:08:30 - 1:16:00)

The members had to travel to a popular spot and take a group photo there.

Preview: Rice Thieves! Oh no! Two members have taken the king’s share at breakfast. It’s up to the rest of the members to discover the traitors!

*****SPOILERS*****

Village Bingo

Team Wannabe Youth wins…I feel so bad calling them that. They get to move on first.

Race to Base Camp

Team Wannae Youth wins…in fact, after the initial lead, they never lose the lead.

Sleeping Game

Thigh Smashing Results:

  1. Seyoon

  2. Junghoon - begins race after 5 seconds

  3. Seonho - begins race after 10 seconds

  4. Dindin - begins race after 15 seconds

  5. Jongmin - begins race after 20 seconds

  6. Inwoo - begins race after 25 seconds

Triathlon Results:

  1. Junghoon

  2. Seonho

  3. Inwoo??

There was some controversy about Jongmin potentially grabbing Dindin’s jump rope to make him start again, which cost Dindin the third indoor sleeping spot. After reviewing the tape, a playoff was played between Jongmin and Dindin. Only those two did the triathlon a second time. Both of them began the race at the same time. If Dindin won, Jongmin would need to sleep outside without a tent!

Dindin won, but he asked that Jongmin not have to sleep outside without a tent. His anger had been worked out in the second triathlon. Although he still had to sleep outside which didn’t quite seem fair to me. Oh well, as long as he’s happy.

Breakfast Mission(s)

Dindin beat Junghoon.

Inwoo beat Jongmin.

Seyoon beat Seonho.
