Variety Review: 2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 123- 124 Family Day trip
*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 5 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*
This Trip’s Theme: Good Son Or Bad Son Family Day trip
My Entertainment Score: overall 9 out 10 laughs
Episode 123 was an 8 for me. This wasn’t a typical format for the show, but it was fun just the same.
Episode 124 was a 9 for me. This is one I’ll be able to watch again and again, I think, and I’m not likely to forget it either.
What Happened:
Opening-Inwoo Home Visit (start of ep 123- 19:09)
As with every member to date, Inwoo gets a wake up invasion by the other members in his home.
8:12- The members are given a mission to earn iced Americano drinks for everyone. They have 5 minutes to get Inwoo cleaned and dressed for work. You can guess how the members choose his outfit, right? Hint: it’s not by picking the prettiest clothes in his closet.
11:09- Opening/Race Introduction. Once the members are told the theme, they are asked if they believe they are good sons. A fierce battle ensued. The teams were split into good sons and bad sons by seeing which of them had most recently called their parents (not texted or received a call). I’ll avoid spoilers by telling you the teams but not whether they were the good or bad sons. Seyoon and Dindin formed a team. Junghoon, Jongmin and Inwoo formed the other team.
The entire race is to pull out the flag that says “filial duty” first. The winners get a banquet. The losers…get a special experience. The good sons start 10 minutes earlier.
First Mission: Senior Citizen Rest Stop Gift (19:09- 28:24)
**Because of the way this race was conducted, there is going to be a LITTLE overlap on each mission as one team finishes up the former mission and then catches up. I’m going to put the time stamps for each new mission at the point that it is first introduced.**
Just before they set out, each team was given the ability to choose their allowance for the day. They could choose any amount from $10 to $100 dollars. Both teams felt it might be a trick, so Seyoon and Dindin took $70 and the other team took $90.
Their first mission was at a rest stop on the way to the final destination. They had to roll a die numbered 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 100 before they knew what it was for. After rolling, they learned that they buy presents and hand them out to that many senior citizens. Seyoon and Dindin had to give 10 gifts while Junghoon, Jongmin, and Inwoo had to give 1 gift.
Lunch Game (28:24-34:39)
In order to leave the rest stop, the members had to eat lunch…costing exactly the amount they had remaining after buying gifts for the senior citizens. They were not allowed to buy snacks to take with them in the car. If they had been generous (good) sons, their meal wouldn’t be burdensome.
Second Mission: Fill the Water Bowl at the Park (34:39- 46:11)
**There is a driving section at the beginning of this section.**
Two members have to carry on their shoulders a pole with a bucket of water suspended on the middle. They must go around a park (including both up and down a set of stairs) without spilling water. The bucket can slide around on the pole, so one or either member could end up soaked. At the end of the course, they will put any water they saved into a bucket. If they pass a certain point within 3 minutes, it’s a success and they can move on. If not, they must try again.
Third Mission: Lucky Snack Mission (46:11- 51:03)
Chestnut Buns and banana milk are apparently laid out before them. Half of the buns are actually wasabi buns and half of the milk is full of salt. They have to pick the delicious one of each in order to leave. If they get a yucky one, they have to wait 5 minutes until they can try again.
Fourth Mission: Parent Phone Call (51:03- 1:04:03)
One member must call their parent and talk for 5 minutes with no pauses more than 3 seconds long in order to leave. There was a lot of overlap between this and the previous mission as far as timestamps go.
Last Mission: Filial Duty Flag Race (1:04:03- 9:16 of episode 124)
In Gongsanseong Fortress, there are many pathways. At each intersection, a yes/no question is presented to them on a flag. They must follow the correct answers until they reach a stopping point. Each stopping point has a flag with a Chinese character on it. They need to do a mission to get that flag. If they succeed, they can take the flag to a final destination to check on the meaning of the character. The team that brings the flag that says “filial duty” wins and gets a feast.
Feast (start of episode 124)
The losing team has to make their own injulmi…which includes using a huge hammer to beat the dough.
Sleeping Mission: (9:16 of episode 124- )
Game Set-up (9:16- 15:36)
During the rest time, the members are called out one by one and told to pick a box. They change into the costume within….some of the scariest princesses I’ve ever seen. Junghoon makes a particularly threatening Snow White. haha.
Princess Relay Explanation (15:36- 20:00)
They have 10 chances to succeed in the relay. If they do, they all sleep indoors. If they fail, they will all have to sleep outdoors without a tent! The missions are related to the characters they chose, so the first few tries are completed in that order, but they are allowed to change the order after a while.
There are 6 missions to complete in 99 seconds:
Sing Chungha’s “Gotta Go” then say a line and catch a shoe (thrown by the prince) in a basket held on their head. Finally he and the prince must do 15 elephant spins and high five.
Say a line then break an apple with his bare hands in one try. Then he must take a bite, collapse and not react when the prince throws a cup of water on his face to “wake” him.
Say a line, wear a sack and jump over 3 (short) hurdles, and pull a tablecloth off a table without any of the things on it dropping to the ground.
Say a line and then crack an egg on his forehead. It’s only a success if the egg is boiled (rather than raw). The eggs have a 50-50 chance of being cooked.
10 jumps in a group jump rope. *They have to run into the jump rope one at a time and make 10 jumps after they are all in the line.*
Say a line and break a gourd over his head. If the gourd doesn’t break, it's a failure.
Princess Relay (20:00- 40:53) Yes…this was just as funny as it seems like it would be.
Sleeping (40:53- 42:27) The members are told the morning mission before bed and they all try to study. They simply must memorize the first verse of a kids song, “Mother’s Love” and be the first few to sing it when they get to the mission location. They are given the lyrics to study and everything….how hard can it be?
Morning Mission: Distraction Song (42:27- 1:01:07)
They line up in front of a large choir, much confused by its being there at all. The first three to finish one verse win the right to have breakfast…The fact that the others have to wear headphones while the others take their first turn should tell you a lot about how this goes. But if that doesn’t tell you enough, I’ll let you know that there are three levels of distraction provided by the choir. 1. Singing in a round. 2. Singing a different, but similar song. 3. Jumping out and singing loudly in the member’s ear.
Breakfast (57:09)
Teacher visit: Getting Off Work Game (1:01:07- end of episode)
One of their actual teachers comes to the show for a visit. The members are given three ‘hints’ from the teacher and have to guess whose teacher it is…that’s just for fun for them. Then they play a game to decide who gets to go home and who has to stay and do 100 games with the teacher. The best 2 get to go home. The game to determine this is a “Laughing Game”. They must have the loudest laugh, in decimals.
1:15:00 - Special experience for the guys that got off work. They get to turn a huge statue in a full circle as a part of a special ceremony that happens every week in the local area. There is a parade and everything. It looks really fun.
Preview: Minus One Tour. Do they get to take away the bad things? Only one way to find out.
*****SPOILERS*****
Opening Mission
Success- Everyone gets coffee.
*Note: their efforts to get him a weird outfit didn’t work. He looked good anyway.*
Lunch Game
The good sons had saved a lot of money, so they had to eat a huge lunch. The bad sons caught up and passed the good sons at this point.
Lucky Snack Mission
The teams were pretty neck and neck coming into this. The good sons team gets lucky on the first try and leaves right away. The bad sons team….not so much. They needed 6 tries and finished just as the good sons team was leaving the phone call mission.
Flag Race
Team good sons wins dinner! Want to know who that is? Okay, okay. I’ll tell you. Dindin and Seyoon win dinner!
Sleeping Game: Princess Relay
They BARELY make it on their last try. There is a super dramatic gourd inspection. All the members get to sleep indoors.
Breakfast Mission: Distraction Song
Dindin, Inwoo and Seyoon and eat breakfast.
Escaping Work Mission
Dindin and Inwoo get off work.
