Variety Review: 2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 116- 118 pt. 1 Young and Old Meet trip

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

This Trip’s Theme: Young and Old Meet trip

My Entertainment Score: overall 8 out 10 laughs

Episode 116 was an 8 for me. 1 game, 1 meal, and 1 member initiated photoshoot-what more do you need?

Episode 117 was a 9 for me. The members kept adding rules to the ones given by the staff that made their lives more difficult but made for some great comedic moments.

Episode 118 pt 1 was a 7 for me. The games were funny but not super memorable. Breakfast was a hoot though.

What Happened:

Opening (start of ep 116- 38:30)

To begin, the members are split into three teams: Junghoon and Ravi, Jongmin and Inwoo, Seyoon and Inwoo. Each team, you’ll notice there is one older member paired with a younger member. The pairs are sent off to complete a 100 question quiz about their partner.

11:10- They travel to the next location, Seodo Station which is a popular spot for taking social media pictures at the moment. They promptly spend a decent chunk of time doing an impromptu photo shoot for themselves.

Lunch Game (38:30- end of episode 116)

Each team is given 3 minutes to get as many points as they can. To get points, they have to balance a ball on two ropes (the ends of which each member is holding) as they carry the ball to a bucket and deposit it. The buckets are worth different amounts of points based on how close they are to the starting point or in one case how high its location is (1, 3, 6, and 20 point buckets are available). As an added difficulty, there are red segments on the ropes near where the members hold the ropes that a ball is not allowed to touch.

1:00:00 - Traveling to Restaurant

1:07:07 - Lunch.

Dinner Game (start of episode 117- 49:46)

The members had to get in line at a famous bread store and order without being recognized in order to get dinner. They went in pairs and set up…without prompting from the staff, I might add…extra ‘acting’ scenarios for each other to make it more interesting. The fun thing about this game is that the losing teams felt good because they were recognized, so even without the meal, they didn’t feel terrible.

Game (14:10- 30:30) I’m putting the exact timestamp on this because it was so funny. My kids acted out some of these performances over and over.

Dinner (30:30- 48:31) Over lunch, they played various games to introduce Inwoo to the games they play over meals in order to ‘earn’ a bite of the winning meals.

**Time Gap is when the members traveled to base camp.**

Dessert Game (49:46- end of episode 117)

The members play ping pong on an old table with old paddles as an alternative to a rain-wet field where they were meant to play foot volleyball. The winner of the first round gets bread. The winner of the second round gets drinks as well. They add the rule that they cannot say ANY English words…to include ‘okay’. If they said an English word, their score returned to zero.

52:40- Inwoo and Jongmin v Dindin and Seyoon. Inwoo had never played ping pong before!

1:03:23- winners of round 1 v Ravi and Junghoon.

1:10:53- Bonus round for the ultimate loser to get some bread. The members did this all on their own.

1:16:52- Dessert Time

Sleeping Game (start of episode 118- 25:08)

This was a quiz game! The first and second place teams get to sleep indoors. The quiz is based on the old and new concept, so the young members sat across from their older counterparts. The questions for the younger members were about things from older times and vice versa the questions for the older members were about new or trendy things.

Morning Mission (25:08- 44:50 of episode 118)

The winning team can eat freely at the breakfast truck. The second place team will be allowed to choose only 3 side dishes and cannot have soup. The last place team doesn’t get breakfast.

The mission was a ‘golden bell’ quiz about their partner. The members have to match answers to questions based on the introduction quiz they did at the very beginning of the trip.

34:25 -Breakfast

Preview: Han Gain (Junghoon’s wife) joins the cast for a special spring episode. I can’t wait to see how she fits in with the members!
