Ranking All 14 Oh My Girl Title Tracks
I’m back with another title track ranking for a girl group. This time, in honor of their last comeback with seven members, we’re doing Oh My Girl. I didn’t include any Japanese title tracks, subunits, or the collaboration songs with no album, I did however decide to include their Universe release. These restrictions will be mostly standard until I get to one particular group where I will throw all the rules out the window, making it one of my longest articles that isn’t an end of year ranking. Anywho, let’s get to it!
15. Listen to My Word (A-ing)
I was a little dubious on this inclusion since it is a cover of a Papaya song, but it is a title track on an album filled with covers that are all fairly changed up, and have the addition of Mimi written raps. A-ing is cute, but that’s really all I can give it, it doesn’t hit hard, or cause any lingering memories. I like that Haha and Skull were kept in the equation though, that was fun.
14. The Fifth Season (SSFWL)
This song is pretty neutral for me, doesn’t get me as excited as it feels like it should with its sweeping string instrumental and dramatic arrangement. So while I feel nothing negative towards this one, I also feel that it doesn’t achieve what it is attempting to, which is a mark against it. Ultimately this just doesn’t stand out in such a good title track discography.
13. Dun Dun Dance
Dun Dun Dance is, like Listen to My Word, a fun song that doesn’t really leave me feeling any lingering feelings. I think the real highlights are the pre-chorus and Seunghee’s “so high”s which are awesome, and only hurt by Jiho getting the last “so high” of the whole song. I also like the fun playfulness of Mimi’s section at the start of the second verse. The video is enhanced by the pure amount of fun Hyojung seems to be having as well.
12. Remember Me
Remember Me is interesting, it’s a little all over the place feeling, and the raps are maybe some of the weirdest in the Oh My Girl discography, which is not necessarily a good thing when Mimi’s raps are some of the most iconic parts of their music. That said, it’s all so funky and different that it's really compelling to listen to, while the chorus does feel much more like a standard Oh My Girl chorus, and does a great job of pulling everything together.
11. Cupid
Strong marching beat reminiscent of After School with a very different cute and fun mood really works here. The chorus is catchy in its simplicity, the marching verses get you feeling a good forward moving energy, and the vocals are pretty strong for a 2015 rookie group. You can tell that this is a group still coming into its own, but with such incredible potential to go in one of many directions.
10. Bungee (Fall in Love)
Our last title track with parentheses, and the only one to be ranked above non-parenthesis songs, Bungee is a good time that puts you in a great mood. I can’t not smile listening to this song, and the random cute Hola Holas in the chorus absolutely tie everything together. Also, this is another one where everybody seems to be having a blast with it too, and it's hard not to feed off of that positive energy.
9. Real Love
My first impression of this song was that it was pretty boring. That said, I feel that my first impression was pretty unfair. This song isn’t boring, it’s just very chill, but it has the perfect amount of variation and energy to keep you grooving along with it. Yooa’s instrumental pause note is a good example of a little musical moment that keeps everything moving along nicely. A lot of this song grew on me pretty quickly, that said, I am fairly confident that this is where my long term feelings will keep it.
8. Coloring Book
I love Coloring Book and its relentless positive energy, it never really stops, and it sounds as filled with color as the name implies it would. If this song was a little bit more dynamic and nuanced it could have ended up substantially higher. I do love the chorus vocals though, nice to get something more than straight notes in kpop, Oh My Girl has always been great at that. Side note here, this album is really good, if you haven’t listened to all the b-sides, give it a go. If I was doing this website back in 2017 this might have been my album of the year.
7. Shark
This song is ridiculous, my first time listening to it I assumed it was some kind of joke. The whole chorus is bonkers, and I have no idea what the producers, writers, and composers were thinking, there is no reason for it to be as strange sounding and off the wall as it is. That said, super catchy and tons of fun, this is probably not a popular placement for this song, but I love listening to it because it is just weird enough to click and work for me.
6. Secret Garden
The song that brought Oh My Girl their first win and really raised them up into the public eye from being at the top of the small groups. This song is an incredibly important marker in their career, and for good reason. This song is soft, ethereal, and hopeful, it balances the dynamics of volume to help create a feeling better than a lot of songs in the genre, than a lot of songs in most genres really. The swell into the chorus is so memorable, and the dance has that fairytale-like feeling to it that brings the whole experience together.
5. Nonstop
Easily my favorite of the post-win songs, Nonstop has a fun beat, good energy and some interesting little vocal sections and interjections. This is probably one of the best, least wordy choruses in kpop as well, it’s repetitive but doesn’t feel that way, which is an extremely hard feat to achieve. Hilariously, this song is overshadowed by the viral popularity of its b-sides, Dolphin, but that doesn’t mean this song is bad by any means, it is a popular song that happened to release with a song that got even more popular. This song also marked the first change in bias I have had since Oh My Girl’s debut, moving from my original bias, Mimi, to my current one, Arin.
4. Closer
To this day I believe this is the most interesting dance in kpop when viewed from above. While this is from a normal perspective an absolutely stunning choreography to a fantastic song, when viewed from above all the formations create the shapes of various zodiac signs while still being just as beautiful. I would consider this choreography to be an achievement and one of the best in kpop, as well as one of my personal favorites. To speak to the song, it’s got that gentle and ethereal feeling that they repeated later with Secret Garden but I like the way it’s executed here better. Mimi also has her best rap in this song in my opinion.
3. Liar Liar
This song is so bouncy and energetic and it just gets to me every single time I hear it, so incredibly catchy. I think this is the most fun song among Oh My Girl title tracks, and I feel that all the members really succeed here too, getting a moment here and there in the song, the video, or the choreo. The dance is super catchy with the L hands over the head, hard not to do it whenever the chorus plays. I also do like how this song is willing to slow down and stay dynamic, and love the way that it almost falls asleep at the end.
2. Windy Day
It took me a long time to actually like Windy Day because of the very unusual post-chorus instrumental, but once your brain understands it, the whole song fits together beautifully. The whole song moves with the wind, floating along, changing in power and intensity throughout, and really creating a mood. Actually, I’ve mentioned a few times now how Oh My Girl songs do a great job of that, it’s one of the things that makes so many of their songs special, and something they did a lot in their early tracks. I just love how willing to be different this song is while still feeling safe and familiar for 80% of the track, it’s just the right balance to stand out.
1. Step By Step
I will be the first to admit this song inclusion is really debatable, as it was a pre-release single without a music video or physical release, but due to where I have it placed, I feel strongly about its inclusion. If you feel it shouldn’t be included, I understand, just pretend that Windy Day is my number one in that case. Two years ago I wrote an article with the top 100 kpop songs of the 2010s, and this song was my number 1 song. I still feel very strongly that this is still probably my favorite kpop song ever made, it has the perfect blend of soft gentleness and passionate energy. The vocals soar, the instrumental is perfect, almost headbanger-like in sections, and it just never fails to remind me what great music sounds like.
What’s your favorite Oh My Girl song? Were there any placements that you think are way off? Let me know in the comments, and while you're there, tell me which group I should do next for this series, just don’t say Loona, that one is a special project that is going to take a lot of time.
