Variety Review- 2 Days, 1 Night, Season 4- Episode 73

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

****IMPORTANT NOTE! As summer approaches and I will have my kiddos home all day every day, I’m planning to restructure these reviews. I plan to put out ONLY ONE review per TRIP rather than per episode. This means you’ll get 1 review every 2-4 weeks depending on how the show structures everything. I will break down where each game is found by episode and time stamp. If you hate, hate, hate this idea, please leave a comment for me and I’ll see what I can do to accomodate.****

This Trip’s Theme: This is the Moment, Continued

My Entertainment Score: 7 out 10 laughs

As with last week, this episode was always entertaining, but not always funny. The games and lunch were funny, definitely. The photo competition was entertaining, but not funny in the traditional sense. I have the urge, weekly, to call these gentlemen nerds and I always stop myself because I worry you readers might misunderstand me as insulting them. Nerd and cute are very nearly the highest compliments I give people...right up there with ‘nice’ which doesn’t mean much to most people. So this is my official notice, that I will be calling these guys nerds when they fail to understand basic concepts or instructions. It means I like them...nothing more.

What Happened:

Changing Locations (opening- 7:46)

Last episode, the members battled to determine the mode of transportation to the next location. We follow the losing team, HoRavi Fatty, as they walk to the next location. The winning team, That Team, has a short drive to the next location. “That Team” is still trying to decide on a team name. They arrive at a field of rapeseed flowers.

Lunch Game (7:46- 39:50)

Menu and Game Explanation (7:46- 11:00)

The menu is a seasonal Buan menu. They have to win “Word Game in the Game of Wits” in order to eat it. This is a combination of two games that are well-known and played often in variety shows in Korea. The first team to 3 points wins.

The word game is creating a word chain. Players take turns saying 3 syllable nouns that start with the ending syllable of the word before. In English (and ignoring the 3 syllable rule) an example would be: staple, lentil, illusion. In this version, players will get their turn by playing the game of wits. I’m sure you’ve seen this somewhere before. All the players squat down and have to pop up one at a time and count up (1, 2, 3 etc). In the original game of wits, players that pop up at the same time are both out, but this version will have them play rock, paper, scissors to decide whose word in the word chain will be used. The first team to have all their members give a word in chain will win that round.  If this is confusing in writing, they do a great picture explanation of the rules at 10:06.

Word Chain in the Game of Wits Game (10:54- 20:00)

I have no idea how they managed to find 6 grown men that have so much trouble understanding instructions and rules. Two practice rounds still left room for some confusion, which had me giggling. I don’t think they completely understood the rules by the time the game ended.

On a side note, I find games like this helpful for picking up vocabulary.

Travelling to Basecamp (20:00- 25:00)

Lunch (25:00- 39:50)

This turned into a competition to eat the most, somehow. They threw the PD into a panic and tried their food in a number of different ways.

The losing team was able to earn a small meal with a quiz.

“That Team” finally decided on a team name. They wanted to be called “Team Large-Eyed Herring.”

Dinner Game (39:50- end of episode)

Explanation (39:50- 46:33)

The dinner is going to be webfoot octopus, which I gather is seasonal with pork.

To get dinner, they have to win a photo contest that they have called “This is the Sunset Moment.” They will have to go around Buan and find a spot that they want to use to take a sunset photo. They will present those photos to three people, one friend of each team and then a guest judge that the staff will contact. The team with the most votes will get dinner.

The teams can take the pictures on their phones and they are allowed to do some editing to them. Each team will get to pick one prop for the other team that must be in their picture.

Finding Props (46:33- 49:47)

They’re so mean to each other sometimes.

Photo Time (49:47- 1:00:18)

These guys are entertaining to watch when they’re given free rein. They get competitive in a quiet way.

Photo Presentations (1:00:18- 1:10:34)

Judging (1:10:34- end of episode)

Preview- The sleeping indoors/outdoors game is on the horizon and it looks like it might be a mess. They also teased a boat...will the guys have to do night fishing?
