Ranking All 7 Everglow Title Tracks
Now, you may see this title and think “Everglow only has 6 title tracks,” and you’d be right, I’m counting the single Promise as well, it really doesn’t count, but it has a full video, and I like it, so it gets to be here. Also, traditionally I’ve lined these title track rankings up with comebacks, but instead I’m doing this in hopes of willing a comeback into existence and it’s been almost 2 years, don’t let me down Stone Music.
7. Adios
I’m a little bummed about this one, because I don’t like being super negative in my articles. I run on the “if you have nothing good to say, don’t say it,” philosophy. That said, for the sake of the article I do have to say that, while I liked it less in the past, I still don’t like Adios, the chorus is kind of abrasive to me. Let’s move on to songs I like instead of lingering more.
6. Dun Dun
I see this song getting way more hate than it deserves, it’s fun, probably my favorite E:U rap, and maybe Yiren’s best chorus lead-in. The big thing that holds this back for me is actually the dance break instrumental, it does not click for me, but the rest of the song works pretty well.
5. First
Speaking of instrumentals, this one absolutely slaps. Every part of this instrumental, from the epic strings, to the chorus noises, it all clicks perfectly. I think Sihyeon really owns this song, but everybody does a pretty good job of bringing that powerful energy and they do a great job in this hyper-confident boss style. A lot of the groups that do girl crush and don’t give me believable energy should study this and see how to really sell it.
4. Pirate
The structure of this song feels pretty wild for the first minute and a half because nothing is repeated, there’s no clear sign of a chorus, and I think that’s awesome. Verse 2 is even fairly distinct from Verse 1 until Mia comes in, there is very little feeling of sameness in this track. Also, the pirate puns in E:U’s rap section never fail to amuse me. Ultimately though, what shines here is the insane catchiness of the “I’m a pirate” chorus, it’s pretty addicting.
3. Bon Bon Chocolat
I’m willing to bet that a lot of people still have this song in their first place slot, which is pretty stellar for a debut song, it’s straight fire. I would actually go as far as to put this song in my top 5 debut songs of all time, although that is a tentative guess without actually building that list (next week’s article maybe?). Everything works here, catchy pre-chorus, insanely catchy chorus, strong verses, fairly good styling, a pretty iconic point dance move. There is very little not to love here.
2. Promise
Soft Everglow is amazing, they do this style better than most groups, and this is the polar opposite of their title tracks, it’s impressive. I will note, if you like this side of Everglow, look into their b-sides, they actually have a pretty wide range that you wouldn’t know about from just their title tracks. One of the things I love is they pull this off while still having a sense of strength and power, which is so rare in these kinds of tracks. I also enjoy this because it suits Onda so much better, and it’s nice to see her be able to shine a little bit more. In terms of the music, it’s fun, it’s hopeful and optimistic, and it’s got a good energy that makes you want to play it again and again. I also lowkey think this is the best overall styling, although their peak styling is song number 1.
1. La Di Da
La Di Da is ridiculous, I talked about this a good deal in my best songs of 2020 where it placed 3rd. I’m still convinced that Everglow invented leather, because clearly that material is built for them. Synthwave-esque retro wasn’t something I knew I wanted in kpop, but when this came out it was clearly the perfect blend of the retro style with modern sensibilities. On top of that there are some iconic lines, such as the best line of the year “Everglow, forever, let’s go,” and everything in the final bridge. On top of that, the choreo is fantastic, floor work, some lovely solo dancing from Yiren, and vogueing all done super well. The worst thing about La Di Da, is that they haven’t had a comeback since, so here’s hoping for one soon. It's been almost 2 year and they had been getting consistently better before their unofficial hiatus, so I have high hopes that they can come back and keep it going, and that this isn’t going to be some slow tragic disbandment.
