Ranking All 23 Loona Title Tracks (Group, Subunits, and Solos)

Ranking All 23 Loona Title Tracks (Group, Subunits, and Solos)

So, I’m seeing Loona in concert soon and it seems as good a time as any to do their title track rankings. I’ve been holding off on this one due to the sheer volume of content that they have, but I think I’m ready. That said, after you get through mine, share your list, I’d be really interested to see what other people think.

For those that aren’t familiar with Loona, they’re a 12 person girl group that had a legendarily long pre-debut period consisting of all 12 girls getting a solo song with sub-units being made in batches after every few solos before finally having their first song with all 12 members.

The order of solos was as follows: Heejin, Hyunjin, Haseul, Yeojin, Vivi, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Gowon, Olivia Hye

The subunits are:1/3, consisting of Heejin, Hyunjin, Haseul, and Vivi. Yeojin was going to be in this subunit but school stopped her.

Odd Eye Circle, consisting of Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and Choerry.

yyxy, consisting of Yves, Chuu, Gowon, and Olivia (yyxy stands for youth youth by young)

23. So What

This song doesn’t work for me at all to be upfront about it, the pre-chorus is okay, but I could really drop the rest of the song out of my memory and not care. Kim Lip’s section is the other redeeming factor, the slow down does wonders for the song.

22. Around You (Hyunjin Solo)

So, I actively dislike So What, and while I don’t really dislike Around You, I also feel no other emotions for it. It’s soft and pretty but it doesn’t go anywhere, like watching a flower grow and expecting it to take flight. If the chorus just packed a little more punch I think this would get there for me.

21. Kiss Later (Yeojin Solo)

I think a good cutesy song can be great, especially when kpop is trying so incredibly hard to look cool and tough these days, but Kiss Later isn’t quite my jam. I do really appreciate the song for what it is, but it feels a little too genuinely childish, which makes sense, as this was released when Yeojin was in fact a child.

20. Love & Live (1/3)

This song does nothing wrong, it’s light and fun, but really has no depth beyond that descriptor. I do like the hopeful vibe of the chorus though, it feels triumphant and bright, and I can get behind that. Like Around You, Love & Live is just missing a little punch.

19. Flip That

This song should be super annoying to me, but manages to not be somehow it manages to be okay. There are parts here I like, parts I don’t like, and parts I feel nothing for, this is a true neutral song for me.

18. Everyday I love You (Vivi Solo)

Thank goodness for So What or I’d start this article looking like a 1/3 hater despite liking them. Everyday I love you is good, it has a solid romantic nostalgia to it, and the hook is catchy and charming. Of the songs so far, this is the first one that I would put in a true positive feelings column. I will add, this is also helped by Haseul’s rap being a surprisingly great feature.

17. Paint The Town

Ignoring the Queendom performance of this, which was insanely good, this song is nice. The beat is strong, the sections are much more related than some other songs while all being fairly unique, and the performance is good too. If we’re trying to have cool Loona, this direction is much better than So What.

16. Hi High

The first Loona group song, it’s such a huge moment, almost in all of kpop history in my opinion, because it marked the end of the longest, best funded pre-debut we have ever seen, or will ever see again if I had to guess. The chorus is catchy and the whole affair is so optimistic and it’s really a celebration and a whole new introduction at the same time. Is it the best song in the world, clearly I don’t think so, but it is a good song with a fantastic story.

15. Why Not?

This chorus sounds like a joke and I mean that as a compliment, it comes out of nowhere and is super silly, and that’s awesome in my opinion. That said, the verses and the pre-chorus are good too, it works as a more serious song in all the other parts, which makes the ridiculous chorus even better. I don’t really think the composers/writers/producers were thinking straight when this was made, and it’s all the better for it.

14. New (Yves Solo)

This is where this list gets difficult for me, this middle to top section is full of really great tracks. New is so good that having it at 14 feels wrong, but there are 13 songs that I do think are better. This is the Yves I wish we could see more of, she feels more dynamic here than in any of the full group songs, which is a shame, because she is super talented. The chorus pops here in a great way too, it’s not super complicated or grand, it just works, and that’s great for me.

13. Singing In the Rain (Jinsoul Solo)

From the “Hey boy” to opening this song up you know it’s about to go hard, and it absolutely does not disappoint. The dynamics are great here, the energetic verse, into the harmonic pre chorus, into the drop of the year, the intent behind the development of this song is clear and it is top notch. I also love how well they played to Jinsoul’s strengths as a vocalist, she has great color, and a super expressive voice that she hasn’t got to show off much since the full group debuted.

12. Heart Attack (Chuu Solo)

Chuu is such a rare combo of high talent with nearly immeasurable charisma, once you hear her you get taken on the ride, especially with the video. Even her rap section here is entertaining and that’s absolutely not her thing. I love how charming her vocals are despite the immense power she brings to the table, it’s a nice combo that I feel is tricky to intentionally master, I think it comes out innately to Chuu because she’s just like that.

11. Vivid (Heejin Solo)

Oh my God! Yes! Oh my goodness! I love this song, it’s so charming, and feels kinda IU-ish, and honestly, Heejin pulls it off super well. I am not rating it on the acoustic version where she plays the guitar, but if you haven't seen that version go take a sec to look it up, wow she’s talented. The way she sings “heart” at 1:45 is a highlight for me, but the whole song is filled with cool little vocal moments. Heejin is really versatile and expressive, I think you have to be to pull Vivid off.

10. One & Only (Gowon Solo)

I feel like this song is hard to really enjoy until you’ve come to understand Gowon’s crunchiness, which sounds nonsensical, but I think most Orbits will get what I’m saying. She isn’t the strongest singer, but has such a good vocal color that it balances out super well. On headphones the super fast part of the pre-chorus is also wild because it sounds like she’s coming from different directions rapidly, which I hadn’t noticed until now. The whole song is a bit weird, but it clicks surprisingly well for me.

9. love4eva (yyxy)

This group of girls feels like the most diverse in Loona with what they bring to the table, Yves has this grace, Olivia power, Chuu charm, and Gowon crunch, and somehow they came up with this song out of that, and it’s incredible. I think this is a great example of how to do Loona as cute, keep it dynamic, let each member’s part feel like them without having it be disruptive to the overall structure. Easier said but done, but if it can happen here, they can do it again.

8. Butterfly

Wow, group Loona at it’s best is actually so insanely good, I don’t know why the company is so allergic to making art like this instead of trying to be trendy (I know the answer is money). This song really is artistic, and is probably the best kpop song with “Butterfly” or some translation of the word in the title, which is saying a lot, there are a ton of those. The vocals and pre-chorus are incredible, but the chorus, despite being almost entirely instrumental, is magic, especially paired with the choreo and the styling that evokes a butterfly’s movement so beautifully. Seriously, this is art. I’m not always in the mood for music as art, so this is at 8th, but I can’t repeat enough that this is a top level song across all of kpop.

7. Eclipse (Kim Lip Solo)

Kim Lip vocals are so good to listen to, she hits some lovely vibratos across this track and moves really well throughout her range, so that you don’t really think about when she goes up or down. I really don’t have much more to say on this despite having it so high, it’s just great.

6. Girl Front (Odd Eye Circle)

Girl Front is a great example of a fun summer girl group song done right, up there with Sistar’s many exemplary summer songs and WJSN’s Boogie Up for me. First off, the oohs are insane, what a way to work one word into such a cool moment. And then the chorus is fire, and that instrumental is a masterpiece, listen to Odd Front if you can’t pick up the chorus instrumental well, it’s super similar to that electronic scale running but just chillin in the background because the composer was a mad lad and a genius. I also think that this subunit is the most musically cohesive of the three, the member’s voices work together like a well-fit suit.

5. Love Cherry Motion (Choerry Solo)

This song is very sweet to listen to, Choerry has a really pretty voice that has only become increasingly pleasant to listen to with time. I love that this suits Choerry so well too, it hits her good vibes and positivity on the head perfectly, it’s the best song at showing any of the solo member’s genuine personalities. The darker sections are nice too because they provide a great contrast, which lets you appreciate both the light and dark sides better.

4. Sonatine (1/3)

Sonatine is so lovely it hurts, this is where 1/3 shine as a group, floaty Miyazaki-feeling ballads. All the voices here blend really well, and Haseul is a true shining point, she’s just incredible in ballads. I also really like the way they use Vivi’s voice in this song. She doesn’t get much time typically, but it works fantastically for her here, I just wish we’d get more of Vivi in other songs. Heejin is also great here, and Hyunjin holds her own well, probably my favorite performance from her across the entire Loona discography.

3. Egoist (Olivia Solo)

Fun fact, I had been avoiding Loona because the whole multi-year debut process seemed silly to me, but my wife wanted to listen to this song on the TV when it came out and it was the first Loona song I ever listened to. What a first song Egoist is for getting into Loona, it’s dark and moody, has dramatic instrumental moments, a fantastic rap interlude from Jinsoul and great dancing from Olivia all the while. Her vocals are great too, she hits the big moments right, has good dynamics when it counts, and her softer tones are a good contrast to the broodiness of the whole track. The production on the song and music video are also maybe the best in all of Loona, literally across their whole discography, the only challengers are the Odd Eye Circle songs for the music side.

2. Let Me In (Haseul Solo)

So, I’ve gushed about how great Kim Lip is to listen to, and how pleasant Choerry’s voice is, and the great power and emotion from Chuu, and Heejin’s expressiveness, but if I were to choose one Loona member to listen to, I would pick Haseul. Her vocals are absolutely enchanting, she takes the slow moments and sucks you in, and when she’s given room to spread her wings and soar, holy cow it’s just something else. Her soft belts are beautiful, her optimist choral tone is picture perfect, her gentleness throughout both is a feat. I don’t often have room to talk about Haseul this much in my articles, and in modern Loona she is criminally underutilized, but vocally she is a gift to kpop.

1. Sweet Crazy Love (Odd Eye Circle)

If Odd Eye Circle had been a permanent group, there is a very good chance I would be calling them my favorite group. I've got a big Max & Match poster sitting next to my WJSN As You Wish poster above my computer. Sweet Crazy Love is the perfect RnB kpop track, it hits all the parts of a song out of the park, the instrumental, the vocals, the actual song structure. The minimalist opening to the final chorus is a chef’s kiss from me, the multiple ad libs at the very end are great, the strings are a super stylish way to start the song. And I want to give a shoutout to how insanely good all of Max & Match is, Chaotic and Loonatic (Korean and English versions) are fantastic. Chaotic may even be better than Sweet Crazy Love for me because Odd Eye Circle songs are that good.
