2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 177 pt 2 - 179 Ant And the Grasshopper trip Review

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip is designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game, a morning mission, and a getting off work game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent, etc. Trips often cover several episodes.*

This Trip’s Theme: Ant And the Grasshopper trip

My Entertainment Score: overall 8 out 10 laughs

I loved the concept of this episode and I love watching the members help out in small towns most springs/falls. I felt a little bad watching the blind date though. That would be nerve racking enough without turning it into a competition and putting it on public television. Wishing the couple luck!

What Happened:

Opening (1:16:35 of ep 177- end of episode 177)

After gathering and wishing Seyoon a happy birthday (Happy Birthday, Seyoon!), the PD begins telling the members about the area. But *gasp* a truck begins blaring music as it goes by behind the members! DUN DUN. Just like that, the teams are created. The members that couldn’t hold back the party animal inside (danced or bounced to the music) join team Grasshoppers who prefer not to work. Junghoon, Seyoon, Dindin, Inwoo, and Seonho are grasshoppers. Which leaves poor Jongmin as the only Ant among them. He stayed focused on work and did not dance.

The schedules for the two teams are revealed. Both morning and afternoon, the Ant’s schedule is to plant rice. Both morning and afternoon, the Grasshopper’s schedule is to plan a party for the town elders. The Grasshopper Team gets $300 to spend on the party preparations.

Separate Schedules (start of episode 178- 1:19:25)

*Note: This episode ran a little differently, so I’ll only timestamp important moments.*

**Note 2: The machine (17:20 and 1:09:12 of ep 178) that they have for planting rice fields is SO cool to me. Anyone else?**

Team Grasshoppers all get to wear flashy suits for the party planning. Team Ant wears comfy and colorful farming gear. The members split up to carry out the work for the morning. The show switches back and forth between the two teams so that we can see just how differently things are going.

Team Switch - 21:10. After watching the morning unfold, the staff decided there needed to be a change. Poor Jongmin. Two people will be chosen as grasshoppers at this time. Since their job will be entertaining, a round of karaoke is done. The scores on the machine are meaningless. Staff members will decide scores based on personal preferences and standards…and oh my gosh were they funny.

41:15. Two people from the 4 remaining members are chosen by the farmer to be ants based on their physiques.

46:15. The members on either ant or grasshopper team discuss the remaining two members and put one on each team as they wish.

Lunch immediately follows the decision and the members return to the after schedules after eating. For the grasshoppers, this includes a trip to the market to spend the $300 on party favors and decorations.

Ant Recruitment - 1:13:55. The three grasshoppers take turns throwing yut sticks. The first member to throw a mo will join the undermanned ants team.

Gathering Together For the Party (1:19:25 of episode 178- 11:40 of ep 179)

All the members gather together, put on sparkly jackets and host the party for the town elders. The party begins at 1:25:00 of episode 178 and ends at 10:25 of episode 179.

Dinner Game (11:40 of episode 179 - 18:46)

As the guests of the party left, they each voted for their favorite member. The members that got the least votes will have a smaller meal.

Sleeping Game (18:46 - 48:30)

Three teams were formed. Junghoon and Dindin. Jongmin and Seyoon. Inwoo and Seonho. EVERY team that succeeds in the mission gets to sleep inside, meaning potentially everyone gets a nice warm cozy bed. There were two rounds of games to collect water and then a final mission to see who would sleep inside.

Partner Jump Rope - 20:45. One member holds a bucket of water above his head while the other turns the jump rope for both to jump over. After completing 5 jumps in a row, any water left in the bucket goes into the container.

Partner Water Catch - 26:30. The members wear rain coats and strap large bowls to their stomachs. The staff then sprays a hose at or around them for one minute. Any water in the bowls at the end of the minute goes into the container. Hilariously, at the end of the minute, the team had to make their way over to the container and figure out how to dump the water on their own.

Final Mission - 36:20. One member of the team would put noodles on his face. The other member had to remove the noodles by splashing them off with the water they had collected in the earlier missions. As soon as a team ran out of water, they would have to sleep outside.

Morning Mission (48:30- end of episode 179)

Inwoo’s manager won a blind date ticket on the previous trip. THE DAY IS HERE! But, being the show it is, the blind date isn’t that simple. One of the writers will be competition for Inwoo’s manager. 2 men, 1 woman…in keeping with the show’s title.  Inwoo’s manager will get an advantage of being alone with her for 15 minutes before the writer shows up. The members have to choose one of the men that they believe will be able to win over the woman’s heart. If they choose correctly, they can immediately go home. Those that choose incorrectly must continue the ant’s planting work from the day before.

Inwoo’s Manager : Junghoon, Jongmin, Inwoo

The writer: Seyoon, Dindin, Seonho

Date - 59:00. The members get to watch the date progress live (on a TV) while they have breakfast.

Lady’s Choice - 1:22:45.

Planting Time - 1:28:25. This time, the members are planting cabbage!

Preview: GUESTS! Park Taehwan, Olympic swimmer, and Cha Junhwan, Olympic figure skater, join the members for a water and ice race!
