Variety Review: 2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 77-78 OOOHhhWWwaaaaHH Trip

*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*

This Trip’s Theme: OOOHhhWWwaaaaHH trip

My Entertainment Score: overall 9 out 10 laughs

Episode 77 was a 7 for me. The episode had a good twist and a decent game. The members and their reactions made the show for me.

Episode 78 was a 10 for me. The games were all funny and the twists were perfect even if it messed up my template for writing up these episodes. I loved every second of this episode.

What Happened:

Opening (start of ep 77- 5:14)

The members gathered and discussed the awards that they got (or didn’t) and then the theme of the trip was introduced. This trip was conducted in Gangwon Province.

Lunch Game (5:14- end of ep 77)

The first jaw-dropping moment for the members came immediately when the PD announced that they would be playing the lunch game...at 7:30 in the morning with no breakfast game. She tells them that if they do well, they can all eat. For this game, they are given a tray of eggs. 15 are boiled and 15 are raw. Each member will get one chance to pick an egg to crack on their forehead. A boiled egg will get them lunch.

24:01 Moving locations. They discuss some of the jaw-dropping moments of the show thus far. Then they are baffled to arrive at their next location...a beach, not a restaurant.

24:54 Lunch location game announcement. Ooohhwwaahh! That’s a first. The members didn’t believe it at first. The two possible locations are a glamorous restaurant with an ocean view or….a boat on which they will have to catch their own lunch. Dun dun dun. The staff revealed a huge twist about their first game..I’ll put that in the spoilers section, but it had the members’ jaws dropping all over again.

The game will be partner beach volleyball. Rather than having one team automatically advance, they set up a three-way court. Each team of two had to play while connected to each other by a rope. The ball was a beach ball rather than a volleyball. The first team to 10 is exempt from fishing. Another game will be played with the remaining two teams to find the losing, fishing team.

To choose partners, they had to grab the ends of a rope. The middles of the ropes were hidden. On the count of three, they pulled. Whomever held the other end of their rope was their partner.

35:46 Partner Beach Volleyball. It was adorable how bad this was. Several members straight up didn’t understand how scoring in volleyball worked. Those that did had trouble making the ball do what they wanted. It was a fierce, unskillful battle.

47:35 Fishing Trip Begins. The members see their two members off. And we follow the boat team. The fishing team was extremely lucky. The ocean was very calm and they were able to enjoy their experience. Mostly...one of them was, um, creeped out by the fish coming up in the net. It was so cute!

1:01:47 Restaurant Team Meal.

1:09:31 Back to the Fishing Team for their meal. I think they ate nearly as well as the restaurant team, honestly. It wasn’t a totally bad deal this time to be on the fishing team.

Dinner Game (start of episode 78- 32:54)

The episode begins with the fishing team coming back to base camp. This is only a couple minutes long.

The dinner game is the Impressive Rice Bowl. For this game, each member picks a rice bowl at random. Inside, it either has the word OOhhWaahh or nothing. A OOhhWaahh bowl will get you dinner. After each of five rounds, the winning members can switch bowls with another member. This meant acting as if you do or do not have a winning bowl was important. They didn’t show the audience right away what each person had, so it was fun to play along and guess who had a winning bowl.

6:30- The members pick and check their rice bowls.

8:39- The first game is the alligator game...you know, that game where you push down on the teeth and the alligator snaps your finger if you pick the wrong tooth. The member who gets snapped has to switch rice bowls.

11:13 The second game is the 3-6-9 game. I’ve described this in other articles. Briefly, its a game where you count, each person saying a number in turn. But any number that includes a 3, 6, or 9 is prohibited. On those numbers, the member has to clap as a place marker. Saying those numbers or a wrong number or clapping in the wrong place gets you out. The final member in this game has to switch rice bowls.

15:00 The third game is the Perfect Pitch Game. This is the game where they have to emphasize each syllable in a word one at a time in order. (Eg: ABracadabra, abRAcadabra, abraCAdabra, abracaDABra, abracadabRA). The first member to correctly do this will have to switch rice bowls. Jongmin and Junghoon make this game unnecessarily funny.

18:18 The fourth game is the multiplication game. This is simple. The PD gives out rapid fire multiplication questions to each member in turn. The members are out as soon as they answer incorrectly or fail to answer. Last man standing has to switch rice bowls.

20:04 The final round is the Omegitteok Game. This is a common game on this show and runs a lot like the 3-6-9 game. The words “tteokbokki omegitteok” are said, one syllable at a time by each member. The tteok is a forbidden syllable. The members facepalm as a place marker. The last surviving member has to switch rice bowls.

26:17 Dinner. The winners got a meal of chicken soup. The losers got rice and seasoning.

Morning Mission (32:54- end of ep 78)

Notice anything missing? That’s right! There was no sleeping indoors or outdoors game. The announcement scared the members and rightly so. Instead, the members played a game to go home that night or do a LONG 5 hour hike the following morning (but they get to sleep inside no matter what). The game they played is probably going to be in my top 10 games on the show for a looooong time.

The members played a game to get their ranks: 1st place through 6th. Then a roulette would be spun that would decide how many people had to stay behind. The roulette had the numbers 1-5 repeated 4 times each, and one half sliver that said everyone stays and a teeny sliver that said everyone goes home. So, if the roulette landed on ‘3’, the 6th, 5th, and 4th place losers would have to stay to go on the long hike the next morning and ‘1’ would send only the 6th place member on the hike. You can imagine how competitive the game got.

Now...the game. They set up a tightrope type arena, 1 rope to stand on and 2 ropes overhead to hold onto. Competing one on one, the members would get onto the ropes from opposite sides and endeavor to shake, jump, and otherwise disturb the other player until someone fell off. (This was only like a 1 foot fall onto super thick padding. They were perfectly safe.) The game was played in a tournament, where one member had a pass in the second round. The losers of the 1st round were ranked based on how long they were able to stay on the ropes.

To decide the members that would get a pass in the second round, the members chose lots, numbered 1-6. 1 went against 2, 3 against 4 and then the winners of those bouts would compete in the second round for the chance to compete in the final. The members that got numbers 5 and 6 competed in round one and then automatically passed to the final round.

1- Junghoon vs 2- Ravi

3- Seyoon vs 4- Seonho

5- Dindin vs 6- Jongmin

43:00----THE FUN BEGINS! I couldn’t love this game more.

58:20- They announce the mountain that they will have to hike on tomorrow and welcome their guide...the same man that they went to work for as a morning mission at the beginning of the show to make walking sticks. That gentleman comes to speak to them and is given the honor of spinning the roulette. Care to guess what number it landed on?

1:10:45- The hike. The man that took them was extremely knowledgeable about the flora, so if you enjoy flowers, this section might be for you.

Preview: Stay on the Island Special Trip.

*****SPOILERS*****

Lunch Game

All the members chose a boiled egg...then they negotiated for one more pick to get coffee in addition to lunch. Seonho puts his lunch on the line to make that happen, but he picks another boiled egg.

The twist? Every egg was hard-boiled, not just 15. The members couldn’t have failed if they wanted to. The real game was the location game to determine who had to go fishing.

Partner Beach Volleyball Partners- Ravi and Jongmin, Dindin and Seonho, Junghoon and Seyoon.

The first team to pass was Dindin and Seonho.

The second team to pass was Junghoon and Seyoon

That left Jongmin and Ravi to take the boat and fish for their lunch.

Dinner Games

Alligator Game- Jongmin switches rice bowls. He picks Seyoon to trade with.

3-6-9 Game- Dindin switches rice bowls. He picks Jongmin to trade with.

Perfect Pitch Game- Junghoon switches rice bowls. He picks Seonho to trade with.

Multiplication Game- Dindin switches rice bowls. He picks Seonho to trade with.

Omegitteok Game- Dindin switches rice bowls. He picks Junghoon to trade with.

In the end, Junghoon, Dindin, and Seyoon have winning rice bowls and get dinner.

Morning Mission

Round 1: Ravi beats Junghoon

Seonho beats Seyoon

Jongmin beats Dindin--Jongmin, thanks to the pass in round 2, is guaranteed at least 2nd place.

Round 2: Ravi beats Seonho...and it was a crazy victory. Seonho is now 3rd.

Round 3 aka FINALS! Ravi beats Jongmin (in my favorite embarrassing win of the show) and gets 1st place. Jongmin is 2nd.

4th goes to Seyoon who fell off after 3 minutes 21 seconds.

5th goes to Junghoon who fell off after 3 minutes 6 seconds.

6th goes to Dindin. They didn’t even give his time. It was so clear.

The roulette lands on 4--meaning 6th through 3rd place need to hike (Dindin, Junghoon, Seyoon, and Seonho). While Ravi and Jongmin can go home that night.

*TWIST* Dindin still had his Wish Card and uses it to avoid the hike. Because 4 people have to go according to the roulette, 2nd place Jongmin is enlisted to go hiking, poor guy.

There are no more wish cards out there, so that kind of twist is done until the PD does a race to give out new ones.
