*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 6 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*
****IMPORTANT NOTE! This is the first full trip review I’m doing. Again, if you hate hate hate this format, please leave me a comment to let me know.****
This Trip’s Theme: A Gentleman’s Dignity
My Entertainment Score: overall 7 out 10 laughs
Episode 75 was a 6 for me. The games were entertaining, but not extraordinary. I always enjoy archery though, so that was super fun.
Episode 76 was a 9 for me. This would have been a 10 for me if the sleeping game’s question was less personal. The episode made my family laugh at me because I giggled like a maniac through most of it though.
What Happened:
Episode 75: Opening (opening- 12:20)
The members gather and have tea...or rather they try to make tea and make something horribly bitter...to get introduced to the concept of the day.
Clothing Game (12:20- 37:34)
There was a game played, not only for breakfast, but for their ‘gentleman’s attire’ for the rest of the day. The available options were a tuxedo, a hwarang (the tradition gentleman’s wear of Silla era Korea), a tennis outfit (the sport of gentlemen), a penguin suit (almost a tuxedo, right?), a Shin Saimdang cosplay (a female poet and artist of Joseon Era Korea that exemplified dignity), and lastly...drum roll, please….a professional body scrubber’s outfit (because gentlemen must be clean). The game was a quiz about classical art, music, and literature.
Lunch Game (37:34- end of ep 75)
The members moved venues. They played a lunch game using traditional Korean archery. First, they received a lesson on how to properly shoot a bow. Then a target was produced that had each member's name on a pie piece. Each member was allowed to shoot 3 arrows for the first round. The three members with the most arrows on their name (without regard to who shot those arrows) will get to eat lunch. There was so much tension in this.
1:03:34- The members are given their elegant meal in an elegant setting that had an extraordinary view while listening to a live classical mini-concert (violin, viola, and cello only). Hilariously, the winners were given choices for each course that could show their gentlemanly inclinations...or not. For instance, for the soup course, they were given the choice of bread or rice with their soup. In that case, the bread was the better choice for the meal. The losers were given a cilantro salad, which had nothing but cilantro in it and a main course that was basically a kids meal version of the winning team.
Dinner Game (start of episode 76- 54:36)
Dinner was given to the winners of 3 separate dinner games that tested ‘gentlemanly qualities’.
4:00- The first game was a test of a gentleman’s common knowledge aka a quiz game.
18:00- The second game was called a gentleman’s balance, because a gentleman should have a good physique. HAHAHAHA. I highly recommend watching this game. They set up a series of 11 half-ball exercise balance trainers, ball side down. Members had to cross this unstable field without touching the ground while holding a basketball over their head with both hands. On the last trainer, they had to shoot a basket with the basketball they had brought over. The basket was only a couple feet away and about their own height. This was a fantastic game.
34:04- The final game was a gentleman’s self-sacrifice (because the dream of a man putting his coat down over a puddle lest his lady get her toes wet is alive and well). In this game, the previous winners stood in one of those ‘throw the water balloons at the principal’ boards. The other members took turns blocking a volley of 20 water balloons thrown by the remaining 3 members. The member that blocked the most water balloons would be allowed to eat. This game was also unnecessarily funny.
44:05- Dinner time! They did a lucky pick for the three losers that was super funny.
Sleeping Game (54:36- end of episode)
The name of the game is “A Gentleman’s Reasoning”. They were given a choice (mountain vs. beach, for example) and they had to choose an answer to form debate teams. Teams could be unevenly split. They then debated the answers, as well-spoken gentlemen (ideally) and a vote was taken of the staff based on their arguments. The winning argument’s team was allowed to sleep inside.
They did a warm-up question about eating only one type of food for the rest of their life. I found that amusing. The actual debate question was “Between Jongmin and Dindin, who do you think will get married first?” While I found the arguments for that one pretty interesting, I didn’t like the way it seemed to make the two men feel.
1:11:21- The members settle in for sleep and the discussion about getting married continues, with some expressing hope and others joy and others frustration.
Morning Mission **This trip confused me by not having a morning mission. I expected there to be one at the start of the next episode and there wasn’t.**
Preview: Our Next Race will be the Impressive Special or more accurately, the “OOOHhhWWwaaaaHH trip”. The PD will endeavor to make the members say OOOHhhWWwaaaaHH as often as possible.
