Variety Review: 2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 134- 135 pt. 1 Tropical Horror Night-Get Off Work Early trip
*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 5 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip has a theme designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent. Trips often cover several episodes.*
This Trip’s Theme: Tropical Night trip
My Entertainment Score: overall 10 out 10 laughs
Episode 134 was a 10 for me. I love the ghost house games…pretty much anywhere. *Not to go through myself…nope, nope, nope.*
Episode 135 pt. 1 was a 10 for me. There wasn’t anything revolutionary in the games department, but it genuinely looked like a great time was had all around. On top of that, I was introduced to more things to add to my scary long list of things I want to try in Korea.
What Happened:
Opening (start of ep 134- 6:50)
The members gather for the opening at MIDNIGHT! *Shocked gasps* They race, without explanation, to grab a number flag after hearing that the theme is a Tropical Night Race intended to help those with insomnia. The entirety of episode 134 is this Tropical Night…in an abandoned school…Race. They play hide and seek. The first four go, in order, to an abandoned school full of spoooooky ghosts…they have to go to classroom 1-1 to find their nametag and then find a place to hide on the second floor. The member that grabbed the last number (5) has to find all the other members. They are out when he puts some paint on their face. If he finds everyone, he is safe from penalty. Any unfound members are safe from penalty.
Ghosty Hide and Seek (6:50- 54:17)
Punishment (44:35) For their punishment, and in keeping with the horror theme, they each throw 5 ping pong balls at a 50 space egg carton labeled with various toppings ‘for’ bingsoo (shaved ice). These include cilantro, fruits, fried chicken, mustard sauce…you name it. If they miss the egg carton, they get a scoop of wasabi. **The winner(s) of the hide and seek CHOOSE to play this game…Guess how much they regret that decision.**
*Useless* Sleeping Game (54:17- end of episode 134)
The members play three separate games to determine who can sleep indoors. Remember…they arrived at midnight, so it's almost morning when they START the games. The winner of each game can sleep indoors.
Die If You’re Caught (55:47) One at a time, the members choose a tent. At the whistle, they must run to a finish line without getting caught by whatever races out of the tent to chase them. Fastest uncaught finisher gets to sleep inside. The chasers in the tents…bravo 2 Days, 1 Night staff, BRAVO. I did not see…most of those coming. Haha…neither did the members.
Die If You Move (1:06:40) Exactly as it sounds. The four members still competing to sleep indoors have to freeze exactly where they are. The one that stays still the longest sleeps indoors. *They’re allowed to move their mouths to talk.*
Die If They Appear (1:10:30) Three episodes of an old popular show called “Korean Ghost Stories” are prepared. The members each choose one. The member who chooses the episode with the most ghosts in it can sleep indoors.
**Note: No morning mission.**
Second Opening (start of episode 135- 54:36)
“Now We Smile Summer Festival” begins as an apology for the hard 1st part of the trip. To start things off, they invited a music group to perform for the members. Welcome NORAZO! If you haven’t seen or heard of them and you enjoy truly wacky things, you should check them out. After a brief musical interlude, the NORAZO guys are sent off on an inflatable raft pulled by a jet boat.
Then they learn that they will ‘experience’ various summer festivals over the course of the day. At each, there will be a mission. If they win the mission, they can go home immediately!
Water Festival (10:55- 28:20)
The mission here is to ride the inflatable raft ride for 5 full minutes without falling off. If they can hold on, they can go home.
First group: Jongmin, Dindin, and Inwoo.
Second group: Junghoon and Seyoon.
Lunch Game - 21:00. After their wild ride. The members have to race down the dock to the three flags on the beach. The three members that grab a flag get lunch. Lunch followed the quick race immediately, so I'm not adding a timestamp for lunch.
Food Festival (28:20- 44:20)
The members walk around Sanghwawon on Jokdo Island. The entire island is considered a garden with a 2km walkway around it…a view of the sea on one side and forest on the other. *Thanks for that addition to my bucket list!*
Then the game… (30:50). They are met with 4 courses, each a random draw game. Raw/boiled eggs, sand lance/coffee, wasabi/chesnut bread, and salt/fresh water. They can go home if they get the good option for all four courses in one try.
Mud Festival (44:20- 1:01:14)
Coffee Game (46:15) The members play waist tug of war in order to get coffee. A rope is tied between two inner tubes. Members play one on one. Wearing the inner tubes, the members must pull their opponent far enough that they can grab their own flag. The winners of the preliminary rounds face off to determine who gets coffee. The losers of the preliminary rounds face off to determine who gets the ‘mud bomb’ which is a feature of the mud festival regularly.
Getting Off Work Game (56:21) This is the last getting off work early game. Anyone that isn’t excused has to finish out the trip. It’s simple…the members simply have to climb up the inflatable slide. With mud/water coming down, beach balls being thrown down, whipped cream getting shot at them…and a time limit of 100 seconds.
Final Festival:Sunset Festival (1:01:14- 1:06:33 of ep. 135)
Any remaining members head to the final festival. They ride a rail bike that goes out over the sea to give them the most spectacular sunset view. It’s a lot of work, but it also looks beautiful. If I went with friends…bucket list. This trip is killing me!
Preview: 15th Anniversary Remembrance Trip. The guys are going to visit the sites from the first ever episode of 2 Days 1 Night, season 1 as well as revisiting some of the most iconic games and meals on the show.
