Running Man: Episode 540 Review

Guests: Kim Jaehwa (actress), Cha Chunghwa (actress), and Shin Dongmi (actress)

My Entertainment Score: 7 out 10 laughs

This week was reminiscent of older running man episodes without going all the way back to the beginning. The beginning was about finding the roles and featured a game that was sitting down more than anything while the second and final game was centered around a mission to be completed in the midst of name tag ripping. It was a solid episode and the guests did a great job!

What Happened

Theme:  Sister’s Diary Race

Opening and Guests Introductions (start of episode- 15:54)

Opening (start of episode- 3:00)

This is the usual greeting chatter and playfulness.

Guest Introductions (3:00- 15:54)

This was one of the best introduction sections in a long while. It showed off the different personalities perfectly and had plenty of amusing moments. The regular members were at their best for drawing out the humor of both situations and the guests.

Race Explanation and Team Reveals (15:54- 21:39)

Race Explanation (15:54- 16:33)

Each guest is going to play the role of a big sister to three (or two) members. Games/missions will be played and teams will be rewarded “money” based on the results. The sisters can then allocate the money to the rest of the team in any way that they want. If someone feels that the distribution was unfair, they can use their “chance” to redo the allowance how they would like...but that “chance” may also increase the number of people that will get a punishment at the end of the day.

At the end of the day, the 3 people with the most money will get prizes and the 1 person will get a punishment.

Team Reveals (16:33- 21:39)

The ladies had already chosen their teams before the start of the show. They were also able to choose the age/rank of their team members. For those who don’t know age (or line, as they call it) is extremely important in Korean culture. It affects not only speech patterns, but also the ability to command others of lower ranks. The teams were set as follows:

Kim Family Team:

Eldest: Kwangsoo

Youngest: Haha

Cha Family Team:

Eldest: Jaesuk

Middle: Seokjin

Youngest: Somin

Shin FamilyTeam:

Eldest: Sechan

Middle: Jihyo

Youngest: Jongkook

As you can guess, there was much grumbling and playing around after these reveals as the members took on the roles of older or younger members than they are normally.

First Mission (21:39- 54:38)

Game Explanation (21:39- 23:00)

The first game is going to be “Mouth Shape Acting”. They will be shown a picture from a famous Korean drama line, but only the mouth of the actor. They will have to guess the line. If they act out the scene well, they will get an extra point. For every correct answer, the big sister can choose a member from another team to both get hit by a balloon and to lose $1 of allowance.

Mouth Shape Acting Game (23:00 - 40:30)

This was enjoyable. There was a lot of failing to impersonate famous lines and a lot of laughter among the cast.

Allowance (40:30- 54:38)

Explanation (40:30- 43:05)

Each big sister will enter a room and choose from one of 5 pouches. The winning team has pouches with $100, $90, $80, $70, and $60. The second place team pouches will hold $80, $70, $60, $50, and $40. The last place team pouches will have $50, $40, $30, $20, and $10.

After choosing one pouch, the sister can pocket some money if she chooses before the members come in. All the members then come in together and the sister will distribute allowance to each member from the remaining amount as she chooses. Members can negotiate for a different allowance, but if they are unsatisfied at the end, they can use one of the “chances” as mentioned earlier.

The chances can only be used if 2 or 3 siblings agree to it. There are different types of chances available.

  1. The Mom Chance- If the big sister lied about the amount she got from the pouch, the younger siblings will split everything she took that round among themselves. If the big sister did not lie, the younger siblings have to turn over all their allowance from the round to the big sister.

  2. The Dad Chance- Everyone will draw lots. Only one member will take the entire amount of the round’s allowance. Each time this chance is used, the number of members that must get a punishment at the end of the day is increased by 1.

First Allowance Distribution (43:05- 54:38)

This was an interesting mental exercise, but only mildly amusing. It set up most teams with a lot of mistrust for the later games.

Second Mission (54:38- 1:17:52)

Game Explanation (54:38- 56:08)

The second game is called “Turn off this light”. Button lights have been placed throughout an area. The big sisters have to find name tags for their team and place them on the light to claim it. Other big sisters can cover the original name tag to take over ownership of the light. The younger siblings have to turn off lights that belong to their team to earn $10 for the team. Other team’s younger siblings can turn lights back on.

Name tag ripping is allowed during the game. The person that rips a name tag off will earn $2 for the family and the person that loses their name tag is frozen for 30 seconds.

The final rankings will be determined by the whole team’s earned money from both the lights and the name tag ripping.

Turn Off This Light Game (56:08- 1:11:57)

Name tag ripping games are always fun! It’s even better when the players aren’t out and can continue to cause chaos in the game. This was extra special because the teams could also trade and betray each other as they played. And then there was the added dimension of snow. This game was amusing from start to finish and I had NO IDEA who was going to come out ahead at the end of it.

Game Results (1:11:58- 1:14:12)

Allowance (1:14:12- 1:17:52)

First place chooses from $100, $90, or $80. The other amounts were not revealed.

Results (1:17:52- end of show)

Game Results (1:1752- 1:19:52)

Penalty (1:19:52- end of show)

The losers have to make a meal with basic equipment and provided ingredients and then eat together before they can go home.
