Concert Review: Seventeen- Be The Sun
Seventeen is back on the road, and once again I had a blast getting to see them, especially because my wife always has a blast at their concerts, it’s one of her all time favorite groups. For a quick note, two members were out at our tour stop, Dino and Mingyu, which is a bit of a bummer, certainly a hit to subunit performances. But on the other side, we saw both members at the previous tour when S. Coups was out, and again at Kcon LA, the only time we saw the full group live all at once.
The big highlight of this tour is that the setlist is incredibly good, which is always true for Seventeen, but I do like that their discography is so deep that we can get a very different set from last time that is still incredibly high quality. If you prefer their earlier music, this tour is a little lighter on it, but it does open up a lot of room for some of the great new music, it’s definitely less fun and cheerful and more cool and stylish than past tours.
The strongest thing about this tour was definitely the pacing and energy. They come out with a bang, acting all cool, then they slow down to a more thoughtful pace, and finally wind back up to their signature fun high energy at the end. This bowl shaped energy is perfect for a concert, it immediately gets you feeling engaged, then lets you calm down before leaving you feeling super happy and having a great time at the end. I love the range that Seventeen is constantly able to express throughout their discography, it probably makes concert planning both easier for its raw volume, and harder because building the set must be a nightmare, cutting anything feels wrong.
Lastly, the audience, and this is coming from somebody who would not call themselves a Carat. Carat’s are amazing, across every show I’ve been to they’ve been polite, high energy, and friendly. In a world where kpop fans aren’t always known for having the best concert manners, Carats are among the best. I also loved the little fan interaction moments the group did have, they were super charming and all the fans involved were really good, played it cool and even showed off some genuine skill in both singing and dancing, which was pretty sweet.
Although I am not a Carat, Seventeen is still always a treat to see live, they put on a great show, have a top tier and variable setlist, and have a fandom that is fun to jump around with singing “AJU NICE” for 5 fakeout endings. I rate this tour a solid 8 out of 10, I know I had a lot of praise, but I did think that the setlist wasn’t to my personal tastes, despite being great, and it just always hurts when members are missing, I don’t blame that on the tour or the group, but it still hurts the experience.
