Variety Review: 2Days, 1Night, Season 4- Episode 147 pt. 2- 148 pt. 1 Up Or Down The Mountain trip
*2 Days, 1 Night is a show where 5 regular cast members take themed trips around Korea to show off its charms. Each trip is designed to highlight an area or else to create cohesion for the games they play. The general formula for a trip is a lunch game, a dinner game, and a sleeping inside or outside game, a morning mission, and a getting off work game. Half of the members (in teams or as individuals) will win lunch. The same will be true of dinner and the right to sleep inside instead of in a tent, etc. Trips often cover several episodes.*
This Trip’s Theme: Up or Down the Mountain trip
My Entertainment Score: overall 8 out 10 laughs
Episode 147 pt. 2 was a 9 for me. I enjoyed the twists on this one and the new PD is seeming promising as a character in his own right.
Episode 148 pt. 1 was an 8 for me. The game for this episode was fun, so even if most of the trip wasn’t all aired, I didn’t feel like I missed anything. Good work!!
What Happened:
Opening (19:50 of ep 147- 25:30)
The members arrive at a hiking trail at Odaesan Park and rush to numbered spots. They learn that they have 2 possible courses. One is to hike up and the other is to take a drive down and walk a short distance to a stream view.
Hiking Course Game (25:30- 35:40)
The members form a circle based on the numbers they picked when they arrived. Numbers 1 and 3 are the downhill course. They have a 5 question quiz. For each correct answer, that member can choose to move one space left or right (making all the other members move as well) or to stay where they are. At the end of 5 questions, the members that are in the 1 and 3 spaces will get the downhill course. The rest are hiking to the peak.
Hiking Courses (35:40 of ep 147- 12:30 of ep 148)
**This is shown back and forth between the uphill and the downhill teams. I’m going to highlight certain things only rather than timestamping each change.**
The downhill members get a snack around 50:50 and I thought it was super cute.
Twist - 53:12. The downhill members learn that they have a special mission while the hiking team gets a chance to go down without finishing the hike. The hiking members are each given a box with 5 drinks inside. All the drinks are linked up to a big straw. They have to name all 5 drinks first in order to go down. Another member gets the chance to go down at a second rest station a bit farther up. They play a ‘breathing game’. It looks a bit like a kazoo with a little basket and a ball at the end. Whichever member kept the ball up the longest gets to head down early, but they can get a benefit if they continue on.
(1:01:15) Breathing contest. Another member of the uphill team has the opportunity to go down the mountain. The member that can make a ball float for the longest (using the little kids blowing game) can go down. However, they learn that the people that go all the way to the summit will get a great advantage, so they can choose what to do.
(1:05:40) The downhill members, individually, play a set of missions called up and down hike. The first member to finish gets lunch. There are stations. If they successfully complete one, they can hike to the next to play the game there. If they fail, they must go back one station to play that game. (So, they do not have to start over if they fail a mission. If they fail at 4, they go back to 3.)
Station 1- Drawing the autumn leaves card in a Go Stop Deck. (After the first time, they simply have to get to the station, turn around and head out.)
Station 2- Getting closer to 100 dB saying “Yahoo” (versus a staff member)
Station 3- “Dibidibidib”...or “don’t peek-a-boo”. A staff member is on the other side of a tree. Three times in a row, they (staff and member) will peek (left, right, or stay hidden). As long as they do not make eye contact with the staff member, they can move on.
Station 4- Partner jump rope. 10 jumps with a hiker that they recruit as they walk past.
Station 5- Break through two security staff members who are holding hands (Red Rover…)
Lunch (12:30 of ep 148- 18:21)
***They previewed sleeping games or dinner games at the end of episode 147 that featured a Halloween theme. They cut all those scenes out of respect after the Itaewon crowd surge tragedy.***
Foot Massage (18:21- 22:00)
Two members get a special foot massage….and by that I mean a massage where the masseuse uses feet instead of hands for the work.
Getting Off Work Mission (22:00- 34:13 of ep 148)
Hongcheon Ginkgo Forest at the base of Odae Mountain is the location of this mission. It’s officially added to my bucket list. The entire forest was planted by one man for his wife. How romantic is that? It’s only open to the public for the month of October because it is private land still.
The members play a game in 3 rounds. In each round, each member has one letter on their back. They run around in the trees, trying to see each other’s letters. The first member to guess the word gets to go home immediately. The next round only starts when the member that started home sends proof that they have left Hongcheon. The final two members can leave together.
Preview: Ha Jiwon (actress) and Kang Haneul (actor) join the members for the next trip.
*****SPOILERS*****
Hiking Courses
Junghoon and Dindin end up going on the downhill course. I was touched by how Dindin decided to put on the other safe space. He asked who the cameramen for his possible companion members were and when he couldn’t choose between them easily (based on age or health), he had them come forward and do rock, paper, scissors.
Jongmin, Seyoon, and Inwoo have to hike.
Downhill Team:
Seyoon guesses the drinks correctly and goes down early.
Inwoo makes the ball float longest, but chooses to finish hiking to the summit. The prize for getting to the summit is lunch.
Hiking Team: Junghoon is able to finish all five games first, so he gets lunch as well. They both also get the foot massage.
Going Home Game
Dindin leaves first.
Inwoo leaves second… Seyoon guesses without any game happening at all. He guesses correctly just knowing his own letter, but he negotiates for everyone to get a cola and an actual second round to be played.
Seyoon leaves third.
