RUNNING MAN CLASSICS Episodes 61-70
The classic episodes’ cast was Jaesuk, Seokjin, Jongkook, Haha, Jihyo, Gary, Kwangsoo--7 members.
Episode 61
Guests: Kang Jiyoung (of Kara), Lee Yeonhee (actress), Kim Joohyuck (actor)
Location: Beijing, China
Games: Great Wall Challenge, Language Challenge, Water Pouring Challenge, Race to the Hotel
Highlights or notes:
Jiyoung was there to replace Jihyo who was absent due to a drama filming schedule conflict.
The Great Wall challenge had them doing various missions at checkpoints along the Great Wall of China to include jegichagi, running, and completing lyrics. As soon as they completed one mission, they could turn around and head to the next mission area.
For the language challenge, they were told to get 3 different dishes in the market area. They simply had to remember the Chinese words and bring back the correct foods. I would have been doing this forever!
The water pouring mission was to pour water through a pot with a ridiculously long spout into a cup on a teammate’s head. Then they had to drink the water and slide the cup to the other end of the table, past a line without it falling off the end.
My rating: 7
Penalty: None-Continued to Episode 61
Episode 62- Continued from Episode 62
Guests: Kang Jiyoung, Lee Yeonhee, Kim Joohyuck
Location: Beijing, China
Games: Breakfast Mission, Catch the Thief
Highlights or notes:
Jihyo was not absent for this episode, but the members didn’t necessarily know about her arrival as she was the hidden thief.
The breakfast mission was for each member to make the guests say a certain phrase. The fastest time between the two guests would earn the member an advantage–the losing member would have to serve them breakfast from the buffet.
Catch the Thief was an extended name tag ripping game. It’s one of my favorites from the show. It stuck with me over the years.
My rating: 9
Penalty: None- the winners take the prize money earned last episode.
Episode 63
Guests: SNSD - Taeyeon, Yuri, Jessica, Seohyun, Hyoyeon, Yoona
Location: Goyang - various areas
Games: Partner Choosing, Speed Picnic, Couple Accessory Purchases, Karaoke, Race to the Flag
Highlights or notes:
Jihyo absent due to illness.
The speed picnic gave each team 3 minutes to bike to a picnic spot, eat, pack up, and ride back.
Each couple needed to buy 5 couple items to wear. They were given different amounts based on what order they arrived at the shopping area.
The karaoke game’s goal was to match a score drawn at random.
Haha and Taeyeon in this and the following episode were absolutely hilarious to me.
My rating: 7
Penalty: None- continued to episode 64. The winners got a couple ring.
Episode 64- continued from Episode 63
Guests: SNSD - Taeyeon, Yuri, Jessica, Seohyun, Hyoyeon, Yoona
Location:
Games: Dinner making, Pajama Couple Bracelet Ripping
Highlights or notes:
The team that made a better dinner as voted by the staff got to sleep in a camper van. The other team had to sleep in the prop van.
The girl’s van was moved in the night. The order in which the guys and girls woke up determined the teams for the day.
One team became a spy team that needed to break the paper chain wrist bands of the other couple’s in order to win. The other couples just needed to survive until the time ran out.
My rating: 7 - the cooking challenge wasn’t my favorite thing ever, but I always love the couple bracelet tearing games.
Penalty: None
Episode 65
Guests: Kim Joohyuck (actor), Kim SunA (actress)
Location: Yongsan Station to start.
Games: Race of Dice, Secret Agent Hunt
Highlights or notes:
The race of dice has been done before. They roll dice at each stop to determine if they can get back on the train to continue.
The secret agent (and her team) have a GPS attached to their car. They have to complete a mission in order to win. The other teams have to catch the secret agent in order to win.
My rating: 8
Penalty: None- the winner gets a prize
Episode 66
Guests: Joongki (returns. yay), Kim SunA (actress)
Location: Various. “National Race Tour”
Games: Wake Up Mission, Doppelganger Jumprope, Piggyback Lunch, Attract a Crowd Mission
Highlights or notes:
The wake up mission was to randomly pick a card with a room number and body part. They had 30 minutes to get through all the members (waking and washing each).
Each team had to find 3 doppelgangers for a specific member to bring back and do 20 group jump ropes with.
The piggyback lunch had one member that couldn't put their feet on the ground. After getting their food, the team had 100 second to eat the bowl of food entirely using a strange utensil chosen at random. If they fail, they get to try again!
Wearing an animal character costume, the members head to an amusement park and try to grab the attention of as many people as possible by 5:10.
My rating: 5 - I had completely forgotten this episode, honestly. It’s not bad, but it’s not the best either.
Penalty: Staying late to see people off from work.
Episode 67
Guests: Kim Soora (actor), Park Yejin (actress)
Location: Dori Island
Games: Team forming, Marketplace Observation Missions, Ramyeon Yelling Mission, Water Gun Name Tag Game
Highlights or notes:
The marketplace missions were given as “go buy an orange bowl” and then upon their return, they had to answer a question about the store in which they bought the bowl. It came as a huge surprise and started the “Collar-grabbing PD” trend which lasted for a while in the show.
The ramen mission had one member holding out the last syllable of the island they were on while the other two members held hands and raced to enter 5 shacks to gather the necessary ingredients for ramen.
My rating: 7 - actually enjoyed all the games in this episode. Honestly, I just had no connection with the guests and they got a lot of focus. That said, I did remember the episode from way back.
Penalty: None
Episode 68
Guests: Kim Soora (actor), Park Yejin (actress)
Location: Various
Games: Situp on Command, Belly Penny Flip, Ballon Hunt
Highlights or notes:
This episode had a twist…the spies…not so much the spies. The real spies were still there from the day before.
Situp on command was basically Simon Says for Sit Ups where the whole group had to make it through 10 commands without a mistake.
The Belly Penny Flip had them using Haha’s belly as a table. They would tap his belly to bounce the coin on it. It had to be on the other side after each person’s try in order to succeed.
The balloon hunt brought them to an area with hundreds of balloons in the area. They could pop balloons to get clues (from only a few of them). Each incorrect balloon they popped would make 2 more balloons be brought in. –I remembered this set up really well, but not the actual game or its twist, I think because I didn’t care for it. It felt a bit unfair to the members.
My rating: 7
Penalty: None
Episode 69
Guests: Choi Minsoo (actor)
Location: Various ending in an empty theater (as in for live plays).
Games: Survival Quiz, Grasshopper Hunting.
Highlights or notes:
This episode was “Grasshopper Hunting”. It was a revenge episode after Jaesuk betrayed Minsoo in a previous episode.
The survival quiz took place in several locations. At each, 2 people are eliminated. Getting a question wrong is enough to eliminate a member, even without the members behind them getting a question.
The eliminated members are taken to remote locations in a building and then tied to a chair. They have to wait for Jaesuk’s rescue. Several of them have alarms or other annoyances when their name tags get taken. Hints for the lock code to exit the building are under their name tags.
Jaesuk gets 4 name tags of decreasing size, so Minsoo has to catch him several times in order to win.
My rating: 9
Penalty: None
Episode 70
Guests: Son Yejin (actress), Park Chulmin (actor), Lee Minki (actor)
Location: Various
Games: Answer the phone in the locker in various ways (30 second countdown, bungee jump, destination arrival race), Catch the Spy Name Tag Ripping Game.
Highlights or notes:
This episode’s theme was “Phone Race” and it was played with uneven teams (1 v 2 v 3 v 4) until the name tag ripping game.
There was a twist on the spy missions in this race in that neither spy knew who the other was and each had a different signal to show they were the spy.
My rating: 8
Penalty: None
